Crow hunting in Japan

Postby Maths Dude » Thu Feb 17, 2005 1:08 pm

I read somewhere that the J-Gov will pay 500 yen a head for crows killed during hunting season. Anyone know anything about that?

There was a local gov't that paid for dead monkeys a few years back I think, so it's not totally out of the realm of possibility. I doubt it would be a general Japan-wide thing though.

Also with the difficulty of getting even a .22 here it you'd probably end up trying to do it with ball bearings and a slingshot! ;)

Yeah, Rifles are impossible to get. Shotguns are much much easier to get a license for. Good for protection from home invaders too hehe!

Sounds like a good idea to me, but I'm not sure it will have any long-term effect. I read a story about how back in the Edo era, the Emperor made his first visit to Hokkaido, and was riding in his open carriage when he was defiled by a crow. The governor was so mortified, he issued a 2 Sen bounty on crows. The local children all took up the hobby of hunting crows with slingshots, and were so adept at the task that crows became completely extinct in the area. So the governor discontinued the bounty. Within a couple of years, the crows returned and were as numerous as before.

Your right Charles, it won't put much of a dent in the population. I hate those noisy, pesky vermin. When I stayed at my in-laws house in Aichi they woke me up at the crack of dawn every morning. I'm sure the farmers hate them too. People in Oz hate them as well. Here hey are twice as big and 3 times as loud, but if I kill them here I'll go to jail! Damn greenies.

If you kill one crow and hang it in a visible place then the fuckers wont come back. Because they are intellingent enough to know that its dangerous.

MD, those crows are demons from hell. I saw a video last year about how crows are swiping coathangers from balconies and constructing huge nests out of metal wire. Some of the nests are up electric poles and short out the cables and start fires.

I dont know about J-Crows, but here in Australia if you hang one out as you suggest, it will actually ATTRACT more of the buggers. They want to know what the heck happened to thier bud. This is actually a good hunting technique :- )

By the way, to get the 500 yen bounty you will need to cut off their feet. So a pair of feet will fetch 500 yen.

OK then, forget the five heads, we'll work on 10-legged crows.

We've already had great results with chickens

In Japan? I've never tried... But I thought a firearm was a firearm here.

There's hunting on a small uninhabited island next to the island I go to sometimes though. A couple of weeks per year I think. So it definitely is possible to get a hunting rifle. Hmm, maybe I should get a license and go deer hunting in Japan! Where I would store the venison I have no idea though.

In some parts of Canada they feed the pigeons to control the population.... How? They put birth control in the feed!! Keeps the population under control much better than trying to kill em off. Easier too.

I think you need to hold a shotgun license for 10 years before you can hunt with a rifle. I think they are worried about the range that rifles have, where shotguns have a very limited range and therefore safer for use in Japan.

It was discussed a bit in this thread.

Don't think I'll go to all the trouble...

Maths Dude, you might find this interesting if you haven't seen it already:
