...designed to travel in confined cluttered spaces.

The robot also holds onboard a completely new "odor-sensor."... With the sensor the robot will be able to detect "burnt scent" which is known to occur in the atmosphere preceding a fire.

So it can crawl into closets and 'sniff' things? AND predict fires! Is there really that much demand for crawling smoke detectors?

Looks kind of cool.. Although I still get the urge to kick little robot things like that.

Notice in the picture above the important salaryman on the right with his finger up his nose checking the "odor-sensor" functions of the robot.

Check out the Sanyo's joint partner tmsuk Company's cool English page at http://www.tmsuk.co.jp/eng/index.html which reads:

tmsuk Co. said:
"Out of the closet"

tmsuk Co. said:
"T-5 2000 This giant is a concept model created for the ROBODEX2000 show held in Yokohama. It's arms are driven by water based hydraulic cylinder, which we considered to be much more environmentally friendly than the conventional water based ones."

tmsuk was responsible for the design and development of the robot and its mechanism.

SANYO's press release said:
"tmsuk is to "pre-market" the product at the end of this year. (the delivery to customers is likely to take place next Spring) tmsuk plans to market about 50 Banryus to interested customers domestically for this exercise. The details will be posted at the Banryu web site (http://www.banryu.jp)."

SIGN ME UP. It would be fun testing it's "Remote Operation Controller PHS with MPEG4 real-time transmission capability in Shibuya---the robot shoots up at just the right angle.

Robo-Dragon-Doggie will cost $16,000!
The New Scientist magazine this week said:
Sanyo and Tmusk plan to start taking pre-orders in December, and to start sell an initial batch of 50 of the robots for about $16,400 next year.

Duh, I think I will pass on that one.

"VERSION UP! It now looks like a "guard-dragon."

...Banryu's friendly appearance, long dragon-like neck and its ability to walk and smoothly climb steps with its four legs are anticipated to draw attention from audiences at events.
The robot can be controlled remotely through the local area network (LAN) using a personal digital assistant (PDA) or via a third generation (3G) mobile phone using images from the integrated camera placed in Banryu's head.
