The robot also holds onboard a completely new "odor-sensor."... With the sensor the robot will be able to detect "burnt scent" which is known to occur in the atmosphere preceding a fire.

So it can crawl into closets and 'sniff' things? AND predict fires! Is there really that much demand for crawling smoke detectors?

Looks kind of cool.. Although I still get the urge to kick little robot things like that.

The robot is aimed to be used for several purposes including home-security defined loosely.

Sanyo's robot guard dog, Banryu, is equipped with video cameras to transmit images to a security center, and barks at suspicious people.

Notice in the picture above the important salaryman on the right with his finger up his nose checking the "odor-sensor" functions of the robot.

SIGN ME UP. It would be fun testing it's "Remote Operation Controller PHS with MPEG4 real-time transmission capability in Shibuya---the robot shoots up at just the right angle.

The New Scientist magazine this week said:

Sanyo and Tmusk plan to start taking pre-orders in December, and to start sell an initial batch of 50 of the robots for about $16,400 next year.

Duh, I think I will pass on that one.
