The case came to light after members of a defunct elite university student club, Super Free, were arrested and indicted for raping women after getting them drunk at parties in Tokyo.

Since 15 students were involved and the prosecutors asked for a one-year sentence, I'm assuming these guys were not the worst offenders. Still...

Kyodo: Soccer players avoid jail time over sexual assault after 'showing remorse'
The Hachioji branch of the Tokyo District Court on Wednesday sentenced four former members of the Kokushikan University soccer team to one year in prison, suspended for three years, for group molestation of a 16-year-old girl. Judge Akira Onodera said in handing down the ruling, "They bear heavy criminal responsibility as they committed the crime by taking advantage of the fact that the girl was in complete despair. However, they have apologized and shown deep remorse." Prosecutors had demanded a one-year prison term without suspension...All 15 students were expelled from the school after the incident came to light last December.

Japan Rape: A Slap On The Wrist?!

Postby jim katta » Sun Feb 20, 2005 11:34 pm

I can't be in tokyo to visit Taro, but I figure I can try and help by picking up his slack here a bit with news and such.

To the women on this board, as well as men with daughters, please, please tell me how you feel about being in Japan when it appears that gang rapists are now getting off (as long as they are Japanese). Here's the story...

4 soccer players handed suspended sentences for molesting girl. Four of the 14 former members of the Kokushikan University soccer club under indictment over the molestation of a high school girl in June last year were handed a suspended prison term Wednesday. The Hachioji branch of the Tokyo District Court sentenced each of the four including Tetsushi Sasagawa, 21, to one year in prison, suspended for three years, for violating the Tokyo metropolitan ordinance on the protection of youths.

Notice that they use the term "molest," but I've read several other stories where the word "rape" was used. So I'm thinking that the controlled Japanese media maybe has been told to not use the word rape. Anyway, I know how safe Japan is, but when the rare time happens when you 'do' get raped, and the punishment is so slight, how do you feel safe as a woman in Japan??

If it was my daughter I would hunt them down one-by-one...

Well, we don't know what all 14 actually did. In these early trials, the prosecution only asked for a one year jail sentence. Maybe these guys were called to the flat, saw what was going on and left. Still guilty but not as culpable. We just don't know the details. It seems likely that we will get into the ringleaders from here and then we'll see what punishments are meted out.

I don't think that rape is rare in Japan. Besides the somehow public gang rape, there is also 'private' rape in a relationship, rape in the family...things that may never come to daylight. Some girls I know have been raped that way. Nobody was harmed. The last Japanese girl I heard from was raped in december in Italy :!: maybe it depends not only how safe a country is, but how you prevent yourself from getting raped. this girl in Italy was just acting so naive. I couldn't believe when she told me her story! Until now I had no problems of such kind and don't hope to have in future.

Not knowing the details of this case, I will not comment. However, rape is a crime that is should not only concern women or men with daughters but all people.

It is a crime of power and control.. taking it from somebody else by force using the sex act as the weapon. Usually, women are the victims, but occassionally men and children are victims too. The perpertrators are usually men, but sometimes women are guilty of this crime.

So this should not just be an issue for women and men with daughters as it is a symbol of a deeper human problem.

Using "molest" instead of "rape" is pretty standard stuff. If you read about what happened in this case it was most certainly rape.

Anyway, I know how safe Japan is, but when the rare time happens when you 'do' get raped, and the punishment is so slight, how do you feel safe as a woman in Japan??

I think this subject opens a huge can of worms simply because I think determining how common rape is in Japan is difficult because it is viewed/defined a heck of a lot differently here than in other countries.

I did an interview recently with a porn/AV movie editor. He said that within weeks of this happening, many of the major porn/AV companies released movies that simulated this very event. I didn't go to any stores to track down whether this is correct yet. But I think I will; I'm working on a story about this guy and his company.

I think rape is more common than people realize. I think I said before that just about every Japanese woman I've met has been molested / raped / groped / taken advantage of / taked advantage of while drunk.

I agree with A.O - i dont know any female(myself included) who has not been sexually assulted in some way. Alot of the time it is when we are drunk and in a very vunerable situation - there is a difference between dancing with a girl at a club and assualting her.

Im not sure if Japan is worse than anywhere else -however the mass culture as seen in Manga and such is often full with such things - is this leading to it being seen as not so bad???

In NZ we have alot of problems with gangs and the such.......... I live in Dunedin which is the University city of NZ. there is a big problem at the moment of drink spiking.........now thats scary shit.

Drink spiking was big a few years ago before in the states before authorities figured out what was going on and spread the word to the public.
roofies or GHB.

I'm sure it happens more in Japan than people realize and women just think they drank too much and never say anything about it because of embarassment.

There's also that Japanese cultural notion of what happens while one is drunk didn't really happen or is excuseable because of drunkenness.

Yeah i agree. i bet there are many times when people think they have just drunk to much or eaten something funny. Its really scary though. I mean you can see some sleezy guy coming onto you and try and difuse the situation, but 99% of the time you are not going to know if your drink has been spiked

WATCH YOUR DRINKS PEOPLE!!!!!

'Hysteric Blue' guitarist handed 14 years for rape
Mainichi
The guitarist of the now-defunct rock band Hysteric Blue was Monday ordered to spend 14 years in prison after being convicted in the Tokyo District Court of raping and molesting nine women, including a high school girl.

In handing down the 14-year-sentence on Naoki Akamatsu, 25, the court's Presiding Judge Yutaka Inoue blasted Akamatsu's actions.

"He attacked female pedestrians and half habitually raped and indecently assaulted them in an attempt to alleviate his sexual desires, and the victims' feeling of despair is sad and tragic," he said....the rest...

WOW! From the ultimate rockstar freedom to the extreme opposite, the j-pokey! Man he's gotta be bummed.

Akamatsu was convicted of jabbing his car key into the back of a high school student as she was walking home in a parking lot in Tokyo's Meguro-ku in November 2003, and saying, "If you make a fuss I'll stab you with this knife."

Damn, that's not just a date rape of a fan, who knows what really happened :?: Mike Tyson thing. He was just attacking people on the streets and he was a rockstar. What a wild story!
