Hm, seems to me that they are saying that Chinese food will make you go blind. I can't offhand think of any Japanese food that has large amounts of MSG in it.

Anyway, more "research" from Japan. Woo.

Note to self: If I ever own rats, don't feed them MSG-laden food. ;)

Ya cannot think of any Japanese food wth MSG? Sheeee-it. Try EVERTHING!

Think BENTO or anything from a convenience store.
7-11 bento swims in MSG.
Ditto for Cup-of-death-Ramen, yakitori, donbubi bowls, shabu-shabu, any of the liquid DASHI sauces (actually, the flavoring is dissolved in industrial solvent. and enhancers with MSG).

MSG is in almost everything we eat --at least anything that's "convenient"---processed, pre-cooked, and pre-packaged food manufactured today, whether frozen, canned, boxed, or dried.

The Japanese invented MSG back in 1904 and produce more that 35% that is sold throughout the world. Today they believe that MSG is "umami" the fifth element of taste (others being bitter, salty, sour and sweet). The wonderful the Glutamate Association is a corporation formed by the Japanese company Ajinomoto sponsors all the good "umami" research.

Anyway, stay away from those "flavor packets" containing a pasty, tar-like goop that is mostly MSG.

Another FG moment

Postby GomiGirl » Mon Nov 18, 2002 2:13 pm

A friend of mine had just arrived and was staying with me. She bought what she thought was salt as I don't keep any in my kitchen.

As a treat she would often have dinner waiting for me when I arrived home from a hard day (at the salt mines.. hehe) and I was wondering why I was a bit more hyper the next day. I noticed the bottle and asked why she had bought MSG... she had thought it was salt and was putting it in all the food she had cooked...

A truely FG moment..

"D'oh!" as H. Simpson kami-sama would say in such an FG moment.

One of the ways that MSG works is as a solvent that disolves the upper layers of your tongue so you can better food "better" and more intensely. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

And the Japanese wonder why they have the highest rate of gastro-cancer on earth, sheesh.

Wait, MSG actually dissolves the top layer of your tongue?? WTF??!! Aside from cooking everything at home without MSG, how do you avoid eating it in Japan?

Leave the Orient.

Or at the least, don't eat the top five MSG demons in Japan:
    5th: Yakitori with shio-aji , often misscalled simply shio(salt)
4th: Yakiniku, the Koreans soak meat in MSG
    3rd: Shabu-shabu
    2nd: Ramen
    1st--worst: Cup-of-Death Ramen
