Peru Now After Fujimori's Family

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Mar 02, 2005 6:31 pm

AP: Peru orders arrest of ex-leader's siblings
LIMA, Peru -- A Peruvian judge said Tuesday that she issued arrest warrants for former President Alberto Fujimori's three siblings on allegations they embezzled millions of dollars from a Japanese charity. Anticorruption Judge Antonia Saquicuray told The Associated Press that she issued the international arrest warrants for Juana, Rosa and Pedro Fujimori on charges they stole more than $21 million of private Japanese donations to Peru during their brother's 1990-2000 presidency. The two women are in Japan, and Pedro Fujimori is in the United States, said the former president's spokesman in Lima, Carlos Raffo.

Raffo denounced the order as politically motivated and denied any funds were mishandled. He said the donations went to the construction of 80 schools in rural areas of Peru and that the work was supervised by donor representatives.

Usually when the Japanese government "donates" money to foreign countries (through an org like JICA, for example) for the construction of something like a school a followup report is written to determine whether the money was used "wisely" or "efficiently." So surely if the money was indeed used to construct schools someone in Japan has a record of it. This could then be checked out really easily. Whether it will be or not is another question entirely...

The two women are in Japan, and Pedro Fujimori is in the United States, said the former president's spokesman in Lima, Carlos Raffo. Saquicuray said Peru will seek the trio's extradition if they are apprehended abroad.

I imagine Japan will stick to the same silly policy and let the Fujis stay here in Meguro. But if the US is presented reasonable evidence for extradition and nothing happens that could be interesting. I have a feeling though they will judged to be small fry and forgotten. Fujimori himself is the big fish.

Actually, the title of this thread is a little misleading. The article says that Fujimori's siblings are being accused, not his children.

Kind of you to use the word "misleading" when the more appropriate phrase is "completely wrong". I'll be taking some remedial English lessons.

stuffnz: Fujimori plans a 'comeback cola' in Peru
Supporters of former President Alberto Fujimori – who plans to run in 2006 elections despite being exiled in Japan, wanted for murder and barred from holding office until 2010 – aim to launch a soft drink called Fuji-Cola to help fund his campaign. "People will associate the drink with all the good feelings they have about Alberto Fujimori. It's a creative way of helping to finance his campaign," Fujimori spokesman Carlos Raffo said.
