"Tokyo Cancelled" by Rana Dasgupta
Thirteen passengers are stranded at an airport. Tokyo, their destination, is covered in snow and all flights are cancelled. To pass the night they form a huddle by the silent baggage carousels... A Japanese man insists they don't know each other well enough to sit in silence; instead, they should take it in turn to tell stories. 'It calms you down,' he encourages. 'You think of other worlds.' So a fabulous relay begins.
The reviews for this book (links on the author's site) are mostly positive but don't expect much about Japan. Only one of the 13 stories is set in Tokyo and features a Japanese businessman, married to the heir of a real estate tycoon (based loosely on Mori), falling in love with a doll.
