On another note, to silly girl's first post in the thread, I smoke Marb Lights too. I also flip around occasionally to Phillip Morris (sent by my inlaws from Japan), Mild Sevens, and (once in a great while, when I feel like menthol) Kools.
About $3.80 for a pack in Hawaii. --and that's at the cheapest shop I can find. Normally prices are about $5.00+ at any supermarket/convenience store. Expensive.

Nothing wrong with smoking pot. That is good but I liked meth better.

Of course I don't do that shit now. It's been almost 10 years or so. As for pot, it's been about 5. But hey, I'm working my way there!

TOKYO — Two anti-smoking doctors groups said Saturday they will monitor the smoking habits of professional baseball players and how the 12 professional teams are supervising their underage players.

A friend of mine's dad was a medical researcher, he worked on a survey to determine the effects of pot smoking on general health. But to do the survey, he had to locate a statistically significant group of pot smokers who did not smoke cigarettes. The study failed because he couldn't find enough pot smokers who didn't smoke tobacco, almost ALL of them smoked both. So there was no way to study the effects of pot in isolation. But perhaps there's a lesson in there, pot is the "gateway drug" to harder, more addictive, more health-destroying drugs.. like tobacco.

GENEVA, Switzerland (Reuters) -- A global treaty aimed at dissuading children from smoking and helping adults kick the habit came into force on Sunday with the United Nations saying it could save millions of lives.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) applauded the strong warnings on cigarette packages and the eventual ban on tobacco advertising and sponsorship laid down in the the world's first international public health treaty.

"It's entry into force is a demonstration of governments' commitment to reduce death and illness from tobacco use," said WHO Director-General Lee Jong-wook in a statement to mark the event.

Tobacco, the second leading cause of preventable deaths globally after hypertension, kills 4.9 million people a year, the U.N. agency says.

And the annual death toll from tobacco-related diseases -- lung cancer, heart attacks and cardiovascular diseases -- could soar to 10 million by 2020, with 70 percent of the deaths in developing countries, it adds.

The treaty, known as the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, gives members three years to slap strong health warnings on tobacco packages and five years to ban advertising, promotion and sponsorship.

It also recommends tax increases on tobacco products, a crackdown on smuggling, and reducing exposure to second-hand smoke.

Approved by the WHO's 192 member states in May 2003, the pact became law on Sunday, 90 days after the 40th state had ratified it.

An interesting alternative to tobacco and weed...hookahs. Anyone smoked a hookah? Hookah bars are popping up in the States, and I'm sure you can find them in Tokyo.

I hate cigarettes and don't smoke anything except maybe a cigar once every six months (at weddings, for example). But a friend of mine showed me his hookah, which he loaded up with sweet strawberry- and melon-flavored tobacco. It gave me a hell of a buzz but was nice because the water filter removed alot of the foul particulates that are found in cigarette smoke. It also had a really nice flavor.

Th eonly way I could quit was to set my mind to it... and move to a country whhich absolutely shuns smokers (Canada). Here, we have to pay 600Yen for a pack and then once you got it you have no where to smoke it and no one to smoke with.
Oh yeah, my fiance would have left me if I hadn't quit... so that was some motivation.
Surprisingly I found this last time (and it's been 9 months without a drag nor a craving) really easy. I still have gum if anyone wants it. It doesn't work as it won't break the chemical addiction (actually, at 2mg Nicotine in a piece, I'm pretty sure it reinforces the chemical dependancy).

I used to smoke a pipe back in college and in tech school, but then I lost the habit in Japan, because I couldnt get the type of tobacco I liked.

Ah smoking...addiction...I am one of those bastards who quit because he just didn't feel like going to buy another pack.

For years a friend of mine tried to get me to start smoking (yes, I am aware of the irony there). I'd blaze, but I just could not smoke a cigarette, I'd choke on it every time. It felt (and still feels) like I am trying to breathe cotton unless I "french inhale", letting a mouthful of smoke roll slowly from my lips as I inhale through my nose. Looked cool in all those movies, so what the hell, I thought I was cool. One summer smoking finally took hold and I would sit in the projectionist booth and smoke and read a book until time to string the movies back up and start them again. After a few months I switched from Camel's to Harley Davidson's, because I am a consumer whore (or was). Man, I loved those cigs, they were the nastiest, harshest cigs I ever had until a friend brought home some from a trip to France...THOSE *shudders* just horrid and I know why the French are such assholes at times after smoking those.

It was actually fun to let people bum a cig from me. They would, without fail, never ask me for another cigarette again, these were that bad! I was up to about 3/4 of a pack a day when they stopped making them (liscensing issues I heard) and they changed the name to something else. Tasted different too, but I still wanted them. Then I went to a Gaming Convention and it was late Friday night, I was sitting around a table with a black guy dressed like a punk with fangs and blood all over his shirt, a white guy dressed like damned Fabio with fangs and a chest that really did not deserve the exposure it was getting, and two gals dressed in pseudo-goth and sporting fangs...okay, so we were playing Vampire live action role play....anyways, the black guy lights up and I smelled this odd odor. Kinda sweet. I look around and the guy has a black cigarette between his lips and is grinning. I ask him what it was, was it a kind of cigar or something. He tells me its a Clove Cigarette and offers me one.

Instant love! He told they were kind of harsh and to be careful. After cougghing up a lung, I took my second drag and ask him where to get them. That started 6 years of smoking nothing but cloves. 3 years ago I just started smoking less. While all cigs got more expensive, I had a great supplier who got me these import smokes at less than the price of a pack of Marlboro's or Camel's but I just didn't feel the need to go buy a pack every single time I ran out. Then the long stretches started. 1 month, 6 weeks, 2 months between packs. Then 3. I bought this latest pack last August to just screw into the corner of my mouth while I am writing.

I still have 5 left and only 3 of the pack ever actually got lit.

Maybe it was a lack of stress in my life, though I am in college and worry about grades and projects, so maybe that doesn't hold water.

Just know, that you do not need cigarettes. And still smoking them occasionally is not a sign of weakness or that you "broke" your new non-smoking habit. Alcohol is only an addiction when you let it control you. Same with smoking, be it cigs, cigars, pipes, hookas, whatever. Master your addiction, don't run from it. Or you will spend the rest of your life running. I know for a fact the next time I go to a club I am gonna smoke because I like to smoke when I drink.

I'm just not in any hurry to go out just for a smoke.

Consider raising cigarette prices to 1,000 per pack.

Smoking causes health problems not only to smokers themselves but also to people around them who are forced to inhale the fumes. Tobacco consumption must be drastically reduced if only to protect the young people who will play leading roles in the future.

On Sunday, the first international treaty on tobacco control took effect. The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, drafted at the initiative of the World Health Organization, has been ratified by 57 countries, including Japan.

Advertisements for tobacco on outdoor signboards will disappear. Limitations will be put on tobacco ads in newspapers and magazines. And cigarette packages will carry health warnings in larger letters.

These changes, however, are only the bare minimum that the signatory governments are obliged to make.

In Japan, many young men and women smoke even though the overall percentage of smokers in the total population has come down. The Japanese government must take further steps to reduce tobacco consumption....the rest...

Yeah, if you like Orion beer, any stripe of awamori, Okinawa soba in any of its slight variations, Blue Seal ice cream, beni imo tarts, bitter melon stir fry, and shima zori...you win. Otherwise, pay double the usual Kyushu shipping rate to the few merchants that bother with Okinawa orders and get something from the mainland. As far as shipping goes, you're better off living in Wakkanai. One way around that is to do the on-base thing with friends. American clothing sizes and styles at US prices, and same thing for food. Real Kerry Gold butter, and many other groceries and sundry items the folks in the colonies take for granted.

Given your situation a move might be just what the doctor ordered. A change of scenery and a change of pace can do wonders to heal the mind and heart. Since you'll need to be close enough to get back for the kids you might think about Kyushu, say Fukuoka or such. I can't remember your skill set, but given the growing foreign and foreign friendly populaiton there should be something, or a good place for a mainland branch of the JAFO Workout!

Do you guys get what I mean when I call Okinawa an Indian Reservation with tourist facilities? I am half joking, of course, but it amazes me how left behind the place is in many ways. The internet retail black hole aside, it freaks me out how backward it is. I like my long visits to Ishigaki and Miyakojima but I really doubt I could relocate there. Other than those rubber beach thongs I can't even get mail order shoes that fit. But I do love the Blue Seal Ice Cream in the waffle cone while I take a troll through Make Man. The rest of it is personal taste or just tourist trap rubbish. I do like that winter they have though.

Jesus. That reminds me of the time my wife inflicted an Okinawan restaurant on me. They fucking had Spam on the menu, plus all of the above. The place was good for my diet I suppose.
