Epidemic in Japan??

A very interesting article was published in this months Scientific America about a simulated outbreak of Smallpox in Portland. For us in Japan the study is quite relevent.

Flu and the Future
Over the past year, a highly virulent strain of influenza has raged through bird populations in Asia and has infected more than 40 human beings in [b]Japan, [b]Thailand and Vietnam, killing more than 30 of those people. The World Health Organization has warned that it is only a matter of time before this lethal flu strain, designated H5N1, more easily infects people and spreads between them. That development could spark a global flu pandemic with a death toll reaching tens of millions

and the conclusions ask very worrisome

The results upheld our theoretical prediction based on the expander-graph structure of the social network: time was by far the most important factor in limiting deaths. [b]The speed with which people withdrew to their homes or were isolated by health officials was the strongest determinant of the outbreak's extent.[b] The second most influential factor was [b]the length of the delay in officials' response.[b] The actual response strategy chosen made little difference compared with the time element.

The scary thing about this report is it highlights some the serious problems Japan would face if an outbreak of say, SARS occured here; worker drag themselves into work even when they are decidedly sick, ditto students, and Japan itself is slow in disaster response.

Pandemic

Postby Lifer » Fri Mar 18, 2005 2:02 pm

I've been thinking about this myself recently. The next pandemic, as with most natural disasters, is just a matter of time. Perhaps well overdue and a little closer than most of us would like to think. The thing about disease is the higher the population density, the higher the infection rate and as stated in the article, response time has a large impact on spread of infection. As D said, Japan doesn't have a great record in disaster response, especially if the outbreak were to occur away from the major cities, like somewhere in Kyushu. Mid-sized cities with relatively high population densities in the sticks may be more susceptible due to a lack of preparedness and disaster relief infrastructure.

The 'work yourself to death' culture also certainly wouldn't help contain the situation. It seems in my area, the flu season has been exaserbated this year because it hit right around exam season - so sick students came to school anyway.

Just another rosy thing to think about...

You know what the really scary thing is though? This already happened once:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Flu

Estimated death tolls run from 25 million to 100 million people -- and there were a lot less people then than now.

If it starts in Japan then were all fucked. If it starts elsewhere then there might be enough delay for the Japanese gov't to get their shit together before it hits here. Maybe. But international air travel will likely speed the spread. :(
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
