It's nice, but wasn't the easiest to 'learn'. Took me about 4 days of deciphering, asking Japanese friends about the manual, and experimenting before I was comfortable with setting the timer, burning DVDs, dubbing, tranfering, etc... My Japanese is shit, but better than most other people's, on a global scale. ;)..

Luckily, a lot of technology terms are in katakana.. Except for the most important words like 'delete', 'format', and 'burn'. I wouldn't recommend for a green gaijin.

Oh, the remote is shit! Gives me fucking carpal tunnel because the buttons are so fucking hard to push..

Are there 'remote designing companies'? Someone could make a lot of money correcting the terrible designs of most remotes for electronics... Hhhhhmmmm.

It's farkquing nerve wracking for me to use my new top-of-the-line, HDD/DV-R/DVD-rw/CD-R/with-popcorn-maker. It's screen menus are 8-layers deep and one mistake and I have to start all over again. Arrrrg.
Some Japanese models of DVD recorders have English manuals. Narrow down your model choices and then go hunting for the model that has an Engrish manual online. Never, never, never believe the Japanese shop person who says that the "English manual will be available soon" or says the, "manual is easy to get." Always check first.

I don't know about DVD players, but when I bought a camera in Shinjuku they sent me to some other place (it may have been the warranty shop) where I could pick up an English manual for free. So you might want to ask about that.
