Bobby Fischer can go if Iceland grants citizenship, Immigration chief says
Mainichi
Jailed Grand Master Bobby Fischer will be free to leave Japan if Iceland grants him citizenship, Social Democratic Party President Mizuho Fukushima told reporters at Tokyo's Justice Ministry on Wednesday.

Fukushima said that during a meeting with Masaharu Miura, the head of the Immigration Bureau had offered Fischer the possibility of leaving Japan instead of being deported to the United States.

"He said if Fischer has Icelandic citizenship, there would be no problem in him going to Iceland," Fukushima told reporters....more...

Kyodo via Yahoo: Iceland parliament says yes to citizenship for chess star Fischer
The Icelandic parliament made its definitive vote Monday to grant fugitive U.S. chess star Bobby Fischer citizenship. Icelandic parliamentarian, Bjarni Benediktsson, chairman of the General Committee, told Kyodo News, "Today the parliament voted on the proposal and agreed by 40 votes and two abstentions in favor of granting citizenship. Once the legislation is published, law will take immediate effect, so it can be expected that Bobby Fischer will officially be an Icelandic citizen within the next few days."

Just when Bobby thought he was free...

Kyodo via Japan Today: U.S. demands Japan hand over chess legend Fischer
The United States demanded Tuesday that Japan hand over Bobby Fischer despite Iceland's move to accept the chess legend currently detained by Japanese immigration authorities since last July. "That's what we've asked for," Adam Ereli, deputy spokesman for the U.S. State Department, told reporters, when asked if the United States wants Japan to hand him over to the United States. Ereli expressed "disappointment" about the Icelandic parliament's decision Monday to grant citizenship to Fischer, 62.
Time to revisit Japan-Iceland relations from an earlier thread
According to This Link, there are EXACTLY 32 Japanese living in Iceland and EXACTLY 32 Icelanders living in Japan.

Iceland/Japan Data Comparison
-Japan 4x the land area and 400x population.
-Iceland claims higher literacy rate (100% vs 99%)
-Japanese men live about two months longer than Icelandic males.
I don't know why the US thinks it has enough sway with Japan to beat bonds like those.

If there was any doubt that the American government was running this show, those doubts have now been erased. He's been in the pokey for almost a year, and *now* they want him handed over?

I think Bobby's on to something

Postby omae mona » Wed Mar 23, 2005 9:26 pm

OK, so let me get this straight. He violates trade law & evades taxes in his own country, then flees to a country extremely friendly with his government. Then he expects not to get extradited, for everything to be forgiven as a result of changing his citizenship, and on top of that, to be allowed to drink booze while he's in jail.

If he gets what he's looking for, all I can say is I'm gonna learn how to play chess, too!

Prediction of next week's complaint: the detention center is not properly staffed with comfort women.

If you scroll down on that page you'll see the MP3 links for loads of radio interviews with psycho Fischer, even some from detention here in Japan.
