CNN Coverage

A powerful earthquake hit Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu on Sunday, and tsunami warnings have been issued, public broadcaster NHK said.

Japan's Meteorological Agency warned that tsunamis could hit areas including the coast of Kyushu, NHK said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The tremor was of magnitude 7, measured according to a technique similar to the Richter scale, but adjusted for Japan's geological characteristics.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

Tenjin and Hakata are still in one piece mostly, Genkaijima on the other hand is looking pretty messed up. Damn it, that was one hell of a wake up call 8O

Felt it pretty well out where 150 km away.

A 75-year-old woman, who was hospitalized after a wall fell on her in Fukuoka city, had died, according to the Kyodo News agency.

Weirdly, I think I talked about this on Taro's air conditioner thread two days before the quake. Do you think I should sell my newly found skill to the National Inquirer? :D

AFP via Yahoo: Rice porridge ritual predicted major quake in Japan
An annual ritual at a 1,200-year-old Shinto shrine predicted a major earthquake in southern Japan five days before the tremor rocked the region, a priest told AFP. In the fortune-telling ceremony using rice porridge, the Chiriku Hachimangu shrine in Miyaki town in the Kyushu region warned on March 15 of a quake even though the area is historically less prone to tremors. The shrine offers a bowl of porridge to the altar every February 26 and takes it back on March 15. A man from a family which has been been telling fortunes for generations then examines the surface to make predictions. "It was good porridge this year with a shiny surface and not much mould ... but I saw a rare crack," chief priest Masahiro Higashi said Monday... "I think people were surprised to see the prediction come true but I myself was also surprised," added Higashi.

I knew it'd happen sooner or later - I was in the shower when this one hit.

Had to brace myself for a second and make sure it wasn't just the last of the hanami drinking working its way through my system. :)

Big quake in Kyushu

Postby dimwit » Wed Apr 20, 2005 9:02 pm

There was a fairly big size quake in Fukuoka at judging by the number of injuries.

From the Globe and Mail

Tokyo — A strong earthquake struck southern Japan on Wednesday, damaging hundreds of buildings, triggering landslides and injuring at least 58 people, officials said. There was no threat of a tsunami.

The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8, hit at 6:11 a.m. and was centered 15 kilometres below the seabed in the ocean just west of Fukuoka on Kyushu island, the Central Meteorological Agency said

Two quakes shake Japan

Postby FG Lurker » Thu May 19, 2005 1:20 pm

Two quakes shake Japan
Forbes.com, May 19, 2005
Two earthquakes measuring 5.4 and 5.1 on the Richter scale shook Japan although there were no reports of casualties, officials said.

[...]

Japan, which lies at the junction of four tectonic plates, sees about 20 pct of the world's powerful earthquakes, frequently jolting Tokyo and other major cities where buildings are made to resist tremors.

(Full Story)

Uhh, yeah... All those buildings in Kobe (and the damn expressway) were really "made to resist tremors."
