Asahi Revamps English Edition

Postby Mulboyne » Tue Mar 22, 2005 11:55 am

Asahi: A breezy new look to Asahi section pages
Spring is here and we've done some pruning and planting to improve our lineup. Guiding Japan--Foreign perspective for change Starting April 4, the Asahi section front page on Mondays will feature interviews with foreigners and other experts on issues of the moment, from the rapid aging of society to the fiscal deficit and diplomacy. They will offer suggestions on what Japanese citizens can do and where the government is not doing enough...etc etc...

Dingo would like to see a recurring "65 years ago in the Asahi today" feature, inasmuch as the Asahi was one of the most enthusiastic supporters of, and apologists for, Japanese militarism and fascism at the time. Maybe that explains its peculiar obsessive dislike to this day of the US and China.

Oh yeah..! I think it was Asahi that used to release online streaming video clips from old newsreel archives, I used to watch them every week. Sometimes you'd get wartime clips full of old militaristic stuff, it was fascinating. I wish they'd put them back up online.

Was it the Asahi that featured that Killin' Contest where the two Japanese soldiers in China tried to see who could decapitate the most Chinese in a given time - one guy did 105 and the other 110, or something. Pretty proficient katana-meisters.
