And, as a side, Alfred Adler (another Austrian shrink, 1870–1937) who came up with overcompensation, was a buddy of Freud. Basically, he rejected Freud's emphasis on sexuality and theorized that neurotic behavior is an overcompensation for feelings of inferiority.
