For 12 years my grandmother who has Alzeimers, has existed somewhere between life and death in a kooky little nursing home (that carries a very hefty price tag for sucha crappy quality of life)... I dont want to go like that.

I plan on being immortal. I figure if I can just last another 20 years or so, technology will improve sufficiently so that I can live forever as a brain in a jar. Your body is just a way for your head to get from place to place.

Nah, you're on the wrong track. With an infinite lifespan, you'd get bored of everything, especially all the other brains. There is only one solution to such infinite boredom. I will create an army of invincible machines as bodies for all the brains, and I will lead them as we conquer the universe.

I ask this question because there's a unique Buddhist temple in Japan where people go to pray that they will just "pop off" when they die and not be a burden on their families during their final days...I read about this temple in the newspapers the other day

I make jokes about this situation, but only because the situation is so painful to me. My mom is dying of ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease. She is the anti-Terry Shiavo, she's going to progressively become paralyzed, but with full consciousness right up until the end. They say it's like being trapped inside your body. She doesn't want to go into a hospice or nursing home, she wants family members to care for her up until the end. She will definitely not

I had to make a hard decision last December when my Mum fell seriously ill. There is possibly nothing worse than seeing your parent hooked up to machines to live.

Dignity in passing - it's the least you can hope for.

I can't even imagine what you and your Mum must be facing.

I sincerely hope you are able to take some time off whatever it is you do and
am genuinely sorry to hear that. I suppose its very different for everyone, but having lost both parents myself not so long ago, can imagine what you may be going through.
