UN Warns North Koreans Face Starvation

UN Warns North Koreans Face Starvation
Voice of America, March 26, 2005
The U.N. World Food Program is warning that food stocks in North Korea are dipping to dangerously low levels. WFP officials warn that without new donations, they will have to cut food rations to some of the country's most vulnerable people.

The World Food Program is issuing an urgent appeal to the outside world for more aid donations to North Korea.

[...]

Mr. Bradbury rejected concerns that food aid from his agency was actually helping to feed North Korean government and army personnel. He said the food was going to average North Koreans, who desperately need it.

[...]

Some analysts have speculated that North Korea's major donors of aid, including the United States and Japan, are deliberately withholding aid in order to force North Korea to resume negotiations over its nuclear weapons programs.

(Full Story)

The article concludes by saying that the UNWFP spokesman doesn't think that the US and Japan are using food aid as a political weapon... But what else can the guy possibly say?

So, how far will Japan and the US let this slide? It doesn't seem useful to starve ordinary people. :(

ordinary people wouldn't get the food anyways. It's pretty much just a shitty situation for the ordinary people no matter what the international community does to help short of invading. If it gets bad enough that the military starts starving, there might be some change.

That depends on how involved the UNWFP is in distributing the food.

If they're just chucking it at NK and walking away then no doubt a huge percentage is going to end up for gov't / military use.

If they are actively involved in distribution of the food then much more (obviously not all) of it will end up with ordinary people.

If we judge it by what happened in Iraq, the program will end up getting food to the NK miltary while UN bureaucrats skim the profits.

That was a very different sort of program.
