i just got my photos back from SEIJO PHARMACY and couldnt believe the price.....

firstly i asked for 4 rolls to be developed with 3 sets of each using the 6 by 4 size...the size u get in the States, UK, Australia etc etc.....anyway as u know the standard photo size in Japan is L size........to cut the story short
getting 1 roll of film developed into 6by 4 size and getting 3 sets at the same time cost me 4600 YEN !!!!!!!!!

Try one of the little combo dry-cleaners/photo-finishing places in some dead-end residential suburb. The kind run by some little old couple who send the cleaning/film away to be done, and get it back to you in 5 days or so. They are WAY cheaper than the photo specialists in the centre of town, or the places in a department store.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm not sure you paid much more than the going rate for walk-in retail film color prints. 55 Station has pretty standard prices, and charges 37 yen for a "KG" size print which is 4"x6". Same price as standard "L" size, actually. I'm guessing you had 36 exposures per roll. If you took it to 55 you would have paid 36 exposures * 4 rolls * 3 copies * 37 yen, or 15984 yen before tax.

Unfortunately I don't have any good tips for cheap prints. If you invest in a Costco membership and make the trip to any of their oh-so-convenient locations, I think I remember they charge something closer to 20 yen. I suspect you can do better somewhere else, though.

There are no free doubles or triples in Japan.

Costco is probably the cheapest place to get developing done (already mentioned). For my general-purpose developing I use Kitamura (only in Kansai maybe?) for most stuff. I think they're 28yen for a 4x6 and the quality is decent.

Buying a digital camera really pays for itself in Japan. A decent one will give you good images and you only have to develop the photos you actually want.

If you have questions about what digicam to buy, fire away... I'm sure I'm not the only one on here who will have advice to give in that area!

I used to take my film to Bic Camera (they also will develop your digicam photos). Bic Camera has pretty good deals on film processing, but I never tried to develop as much film as you did. Someone suggested finding a little mom-and-pop store that develops photos. I agree with that; I've seen some great deals in those places (great by Japan standards, that is).

and yes its SEIJO....only reason i go there is thats the only place that use FUJI ever last beauty paper or whatever its called....and yes they do digital prints do though i assume itd cost a little bit more ...though still cheap as long as its `L` size !!

I have the 20D... Sold my EOS 3 body and the D60 to buy it. Couldn't be happier! I have hardly shot any film since I bought the D60 in 2002 and I no longer have any film bodies.

The new KISS looks good too, but I have yet to try one out. If you get "L lens fever" then things start to get pricey real fast though.

What do you shoot with now?

Very happy 20D owner here too. Had the new Kiss been available (or even its specifications) when I bought, I would have given it a serious thought. 20D has slightly better features, ergonomics, and much better build, and it's well worth the extra money if those things are important. But I'm not sure I needed the extra stuff, especially now that they've fixed so many of the things people griped about on the old Rebel. Even the improved ergonomics were not enough to allow me to operate the camera correctly after a few beers at the FG party .

Now since the thread was about prints originally, I'll ask: is anybody doing digital photo printing at home? I invested in a photo printer recently, after reading (and seeing) that quality is getting a lot closer to the big pro machines. This is definitely not a cost effective way to print compared to having it done professionally, given inkjet ink & paper costs. But as a professional lazy-ass, I was almost never taking stuff out for prints even though I wanted to. Buying the printer solved that problem.

Very happy 20D owner here too.

It's definitely a great camera. I really don't think anything else under 200,000 comes close -- and many over 200,000 look pretty pale in comparison too. I considered getting a 1DM2 but in the end decided that its large size and heavy weight were more than I wanted to deal with. Price was certainly a consideration too. What lenses are you using?

Hehe, yep, back to the topic at hand... Which printer did you get? Are you satisfied with the output? I am looking at getting a Canon i9910. The quality is spectacular and the cost per page doesn't look too terrible. Especially for larger prints I think it is cheaper than the labs -- actually it is definitely cheaper! Especially at the larger end of the print size scale. Currently I send most of my stuff for printing via the net to Kitamura. They print it up and I go and pick up the results the next day. They have a very good web interface (Japanese only though) that lets you easily choose print sizes, how many prints, if you want them to resize the image to fit your print/print a white border or not, if you want them to colour balance, etc etc. Then you can choose which location to pick up the photos at, or you can have them delivered. Pretty slick.

Thrilled with output once I fixed the problems. Too much goofing around with the printer driver resulted in me double-applying color profile management (in software + in the driver), so pictures were awful at first. Once I figured out what I did wrong, everything became beautiful. I haven't done any side-by-side comparisons with lab prints, but to my eye, they look as good as I would expect a lab to send back. I bought an S40 for my wife to use and I don't think it has spot metering... The Pro1 might though. I guess every maker has their quirks -- Nikon refuses to put cable releases or vertical grips on their non-full-pro stuff. The metering on the EOS 3 was awesome though. I'd meter various points in the image, consider what was important to the composition I wanted, and then set things accordingly. Guess I should just buy a spot meter...

Most people have no confidence in their own work. I enjoy photography and don't worry too much about what anyone else thinks anymore! Work has been crazy-busy recently and I've been rather lazy so no updates for quite awhile.

I was thinking the A3 size could be cool for calendar printing... I never know what to get my parents for Christmas, and custom calendars of their granddaughter would probably be a good gift.

With digital photos you can do this very easily -- just make the border yourself before you send it in for printing. That way you always get exactly the size of border that you want.

With Kitamura you can also choose how you want them to handle prints when the proportions of the file you send don't match the proportions of the print you want. You can have them include the complete image with an appropriate white border or you can have them chop off parts of the image to make it fit the print you want.

Classic stuff is often quite pricey here. You would be better off in HK I think. (A friend of mine sold a bunch of equipment awhile ago. He got more for his classic Canon manual equipment than he got for his Nikon F5...!)

Maybe not. Some stuff is cheaper here (like medium format equipment, some digital stuff, and certain 35mm products), but some things, especially older classic cameras, are much more expensive. There are a lot of camera collectors here.

A used "New Fm2" is about can go from 35 to 40 000 yens here. Depends of its conditions. A fm2t can go from 45-55 000 and a fm3a goes from 55-65 000..
If you were planning on buying a fm2 you might want to look at the fm3a since its basically the same thing packing more electronics.
And if you don't like electronics you can put all the electronic off to rely only on the mechanical parts.

I have the PENTAX *ist SLR..... its a good enough camera for my needs but think im being converted to the digital side......

I am a newcomer to the SLR world so I had to start my collection from scratch. I am focused (pun intended) on convenience & bargains right now. Mrs. Omae Mona was in enough shock seeing the price on the camera body, so I wanted to make sure I had a setup I would use often, without adding too much more onto the price tag. Though I lust for L glass, I'm using the kit EF-S 17-85 IS lens as a walkaround lens. Often characterized as overpriced, most people who actually compare it to L glass find it ain't so awful, though it struggles on the wide end. The image stablizer is a lifesaver for me. During a U.S. trip, I also picked up the biggest bargain in the canon line, the 50mm 1.8 crappo lens. For $70 it takes some nice pictures.

FGL, have you cleaned your sensor yet? I just got to the point where I need to do so; I have these beautiful pictures of Mt. Fuji from yesterday, but with dark splotches in the sky. It ain't the lens, and blowing air on the sensor only removed a few of the splotches. Looks like it needs a scrubbing but I'm terrified to try at home.

I just called Kitamura and asked -- I was sure they used to offer it.

For "L" size (standard Japanese size) or KG size (postcard, 4x6) they do not offer it. For larger prints it is possible.

I guess if you want white borders you either have to go to a full professional lab ($$$) or scan them and add your own border before sending the images off to be printed.
