travel advice

Postby karekora » Mon Mar 28, 2005 8:23 pm

i want to go to the Akita Kanto and Aomori Nebuta (or is it Neputa?) festivals with a friend in August. I found out about a pass called "JR Futari No Kitatohoku Hakodate Free Kippu" costing 48,000 for 2 people for 4 days to the northern tohoku region from Tokyo, and. I became happy :)

Today I became unhappy. I found out that you can only buy this pass if the 2 people are a man and a woman. :( I could always dress up as a man, but I think my alien card will give the game away.. :(

I dont want to do the Seishoku 18 kippu thing, as I found out if I left Tokyo at 6,30am, I would arrive in Aomori at 11pm. Thats a waste of a day (my friend dont live here, shes coming on Holiday, and probably going to by a JR Pass before she comes..)

The night train to Aomori is 14,000 1 way. (as of japan-guide.. dont know how often its updated). A day train to Akita is 16,610 1 way from tokyo. I dont care which festial I go to first, as they are both on at the same time, a couple of days at each is fine. Is their any cheap option ticket I can buy that would still allow me to go with my friend, a JR Pass holder?

JR East Pass isnt valid for Working Holiday Visas huh? I think thats dumb.

When you apply for the visa, you have to say that your primary reason to go is to travel, and you just work to supliment your fees. But then you arent allowed to get a rail pass in order to travel!? Travelling in Japan is too expensive....

*rant over*

anyway, whats the cheapest option to Akita or Aomori from Tokyo by train in festival season?

Probably night bus is the cheapest. I've done that night train a few times. Bring water. There's no potable water on that train!

Does that pass include some kind of lodging? I know some hotels won't allow same sex 'couples'.

I've been to all these festivals. Nebuta refers to both the Aomori-city and the Goshogawara-city festivals. Neputa is the Hirosaki-city festival. FWIW, the Hirosaki and Goshogawara festivals are my faves. The Kanto festival is awesome, too. They're all great! Sorry I don't have more info about how to get up there. If you can gather up four people to split the tolls driving isn't a bad option.

I wouldn't want to recommend anything illegal but can't you grab a guy to buy the ticket together and then, when you are on the train, convince a bloke nearby to pose as your partner for the ticket check while his ticket applies to your friend?
