Yeah, but remember you're paying for the real estate, not the coffee. For the 1000 yen you are perfectly entitled to relax & sip that cuppa joe for as long as you like. I learned this lesson when I had to wait for somebody in the lobby coffee shop of the Imperial Hotel and noticed that all drinks were in the 1000 yen range. But much more involved creations (cakes & fancy desserts) cost half of that. They know everybody's going to get a drink at a minimum, and they want to make sure customers are paying their share of the rent.

oic so you are paying for the experience, rather than the coffee. Still sounds way overpriced. Guess thats one experience i might not have

It comes down to a basic philosophy that still lingers in Japan (but is dying quickly) The emphasis is on service, not price. So the price is set at the cost of the operation. Few of us really "need" a coffee. Maybe now and then you need the caffeine pick up (but Japan has energy drinks for that) so in the end you go to a coffee shop where you enjoy the atmosphere and the waitresses. That's worth $10.00 to some-people.

I often shop at a small neighborhood market because I like the lady who runs the place and I feel my money makes a larger impact on that store then Seiyu.

I am addicted to Tulleys. The staff don't even bother asking me what I want anymore.

Wonder if there are Tulleys in England?

I don't recall seeing one. You'll find Costa Coffee, Starbucks, Caffe Nero, Coffee Republic and sandwich chains like Eat and Pret a Manger.
Starbucks is holding onto its place as market leader with 430 outlets, 30 of which opened across the country in the seven months to January 2005, ensuring that it holds nearly 25 per cent of the branded market share within the M25. Costa Coffee has 349 outlets, while Caffe Nero has 198. Costa Coffee is leading the regional brands expansion with 244 outlets outside the capital. Meanwhile, Coffee Republic lost 0.8 per cent of market share, having shed ten sites from June to December 2004.

Well let's hope Japanese service industry doesn't get as bad as it is in the US.

I guess this is just a continuing trend where by people place more importance on cash than treating people properly (hope I'm wrong).
