Yeah, but remember you're paying for the real estate, not the coffee. For the 1000 yen you are perfectly entitled to relax & sip that cuppa joe for as long as you like. I learned this lesson when I had to wait for somebody in the lobby coffee shop of the Imperial Hotel and noticed that all drinks were in the 1000 yen range. But much more involved creations (cakes & fancy desserts) cost half of that. They know everybody's going to get a drink at a minimum, and they want to make sure customers are paying their share of the rent.
