Metallic to Yahoo BB

Postby tokyojoe » Mon Nov 25, 2002 10:59 pm

I got a note in my email that BB is offering upgrades to Metallic users. Any BB users out there care to comment on the quality of service?

A couple friends of mine have had the YBB service for about 6 months, and had absolutely no problems. Easy to set-up, cheap, and fast. At least in the Kanagawa area... Plus, I like supporting the company that single handedly spanked NTT's ass.

YBB originally didn't have phone support, but I think they do now..

"Yahoo BB?" It's EngRish of course!

The brainiacs at Yahoo Japan (Softbank) misnamed their ADSL broadband service "BB" even though BB means the outmoded Bulletin Board tech from the dark ages before the Internet.

Yahoo BB has been surprising Japanese consumers with its price breakthroughs to deafeat the evil overcharging assmonkeys at NTT. Yahoo BB is the cheapest ADSL in Japan at less than 1900yen ($15) a month for 6-12 MB/sec speeds...eat your heart out if you live in the 3rd World.

Sorry Taro buddy - actually YahooBB stands for Yahoo BroadBand not bulletin board.

See : http://www.zdnet.co.jp/magazine/ybb/

The old guy next to my house has is (his son got it installed) and it works pretty well. Don't know costs though. I have cable TV & internet @ 3,400 per month for both so I think I got a good deal.

I said it's MISSnamed "BB." The established dictionary definition (in both English and Japanese dictionaries) of the acronym "BB" was bulletin board. To name their service product "YahooBB" is very retro. But what the hell, YahooBB is almost in the black---several years ahead of schedule--so what the hell do I know...

Let's Retro!

I've heard YahooBB support is almost zero...
And of course there's NOTHING in English: it's all Japanese application forms, a Japanese install CD, Japanese billing and marginal Japanese support.

But hey, it's cheap and I'll do anything to spank NTT!

BTW: I pulled the plug on NTT two years ago---it's only Tokyu Cable/Internet and J-Phone for me. :-D Freedom from the NTT oppressor!

be careful!

Postby stuckinkysuhu » Wed Nov 27, 2002 12:12 pm

Everyone should be really careful!
I ordered yahoo broadband but when I got it, the speed was not much better than dialup. At that time they advertised it as 8Mbps but when I went to one of those "test your connection site" I actually only got about 0.4. Needless to say I wasn't impressed, and cancelled it. The root of this problem is that ADSL's speed depends on how close where you live is to a relay point in the phone system. I lived about 3km from the closest one, despite living in a fairly urban area. Before you sign up - give them your address and ask what speed you will get. They have a way of finding out EXACTLY what speed you will get so don't take "12Mbps" for an answer. I now have cable and it works perfectly despite being a bit more expensive.
