Google ups gmail storage to Infinity+1

Postby nullpointer » Fri Apr 01, 2005 6:21 pm

Seriously though, they are in fact increasing the gmail storage to 2 Gig and then it will keep on increasing as and when they can provide more storage.

Today, incidentally, is gmail's 1st birthday as well. Check out the gmail home page where a counter is in progress telling you the current available storage for every gmail user. I am sure by now everyone and their uncle has a gmail account, but if you don't have one, and want it, let me know and I will send an invite.

Yep, I have 1236MB right now.

And 150 invites... It's nuts. People were selling them on ebay for $30/40/50 each. I've given out dozens and still have 150 left. They should just open it to the public.

they have started to open it to the public, but the first batch are the people who registered online and who are now receiving invites straight from google. on a marketing point of view, it makes more sense to keep it as an invitation only service as long as possible, even if invites are easy to get. it adds the value of "introduction/reference" to the products.

Yes, I know that they have (sort of) started to open it to the public. Sometime soon after they announced gmail last year I signed up for notification etc and I received a direct-from-Google invite a few weeks ago. (Haven't used it though, I got an invite not so long after gmail was announced last April.)

The marketing part is also clear but at this point it's already been milked for all it is worth. It's only a good marketing tool if the invites are scarce enough to generate a lot of interest. At the moment everyone who has an account seems to have 50 or more invites available...

Since I posted this, I have received 7 emails and 1 PM asking for an invite. If you look at your inbox it does seem that 150 invites are too much, but for every one who has an account, there are still hundreds who don't, and want it. I have been one of the very early user's (Someone in the family works at google), and believe me, the hype has gone down a bit, but nowhere near enough to warrant opening it up to the public. They are positioning the marketing just like orkut, invites only.It does not matter how many people have it, it still adds an aura of exclusivity for those who want it.

There are free gmail invites everywhere and anywhere. A quick search of Google itself will show many sites. You can buy 50 invites on eBay for 99cents.

I like my gmail account, even though it does not handle double-byte emails well. I just think the invite thing has past its "use by" date.
