2nd hand camera shops in Tokyo

Postby Laced » Fri Apr 01, 2005 7:26 pm

Could you let me know of a few good 2nd hand camera shops in Tokyo. I'm after the Nikon FM2, how much do you think it will go for? I found a couple in Nagasaki for 35K

I hear shinjuku is a good place to look, I only know the shop halfway between Shinjuku and Shinanomachi

Thanks

THe shop you should go to in shinjuku is called "Map Camera" at the front there is a tea/coffee shop near the corner where there is an arcade.

Cameras there are pretty much the same price as in Yahoo auctions. But if you buy your camera there they sometimes will give you a hella big discount on accesories.

For example I said before I got my Mamiya in their camera shop and they sold me a strap for 100 yen. Straps for Mamiyas even second hand cost + 3000 yen.

But second hand anything in Japan is a rip off. In europe and america the unwriten rule is that it is 50% cost price. But in Japan it is 70-80%.

Its out the west exit near skyscraper district. If you know where Yodabashi is, it around the side. Ask anybody at the west exit. Yodabashi was doko desu ka. and go where they are pointing.

I'd like to disagree, but this has been my experience too. the shops, whether they are clothing, furniture, electronics, etc., all look really full of good stuff on the outside, but inside it's lame, and the prices are ridiculous given the quality of the merchandise. on the other hand, second hand in europe is really cool and affordable, especially in places like the netherlands, germany, etc.

I have found 2nd hand camera stuff to be reasonable considering the quality of what you get. Generally I find that mint-condition 2nd-hand lenses are about 30% less than new. This does depend on how much in demand that lens is though. Also if the product has been replaced (even if the replacement is not that much different) then the older version's price will plummet.

Second hand cars are dirt dirt dirt cheap in Japan. Far better than Canada! Buildings (not talking about land, just the structures) also lose value faster here than at home.

Of course this is all a double-edged sword....Desire for high or low prices depends on if you want to sell something 2nd hand or buy something 2nd hand. ;)
