Smartphones in Tokyo query

Postby gamma-ro » Mon Apr 04, 2005 6:15 pm

I am currently residing in Sapporo and moving back to Tokyo soon and need to get new service (won't be getting good rates on a Hokkaido plan in Honshu, now will I?), so I am figuring to just go ahead and get a new ketai, while I am at it.

If I get a "regular" ketai, I will probably end up with the W21SA, which looks like it is straight out of Kubrik's 2001: A Space Odyssey. (Yes, I'll put either Also Spracht Zarauthustra or Blue Danube as ringtones for it... Hell, even HAL3000 samples if I can import my own sounds, but I digress.)
You can see this bad bwoy here:
http://www.au.kddi.com/seihin/kinobetsu/seihin/w21sa/

If I had my druthers, and who doesn't want them, I'd try and get me a smartphone. Right now some of the Motorola's are looking sweet, particularly the RAZR V3:
http://www.motorola.com/mdirect/hellomoto/experience/v3/html/v3_homepage.shtml?
Now what gets me is that this is a global phone, it runs on every type of service, and they do sell it in Japan - but for 2 to 3 times the cost as you can get it in the US.

Now if you want to know why I am so interested in this type of phone, it's mainly because as adavnced as Japanese ketai may be (and they are), most don't have Bluetooth, and I need that. I've been annoyed that I haven't had it yet, but whatcha gonna do? Some here and ask if anyone here knows where I can find the RAZR or something else as cool as it (let's face it, form is a factor) for something which isn't 2 to 3 times as expensive as getting it in the US. If that info can't be offered, I would at least like to know which ketai offer Bluetooth.

Thanks in advance for your help, and yes, I have already tried Googling it.

You know, it's funny I was just thinking about a bluetooth solution in the FOMA line up. As I looked on the DOCOMO-Tokai site it seems the only one to have bluetooth function is the iT-series. It boast using bluetooth to connect laptop to a web connection via bluetooth, but it's the rest of the phone and it's cosmetic appeal that have me wondering.

I wondered the same thing, Phones that have all these cool gimic functions, but no bluetooth. With having a Powerbook with built in bluetooth, it renders it useless because phone have jack for Bluetooth here! -and those that do don't have the other cool stuff that you might also want.

Yeah, tell me about it. If it has the technology I need, it looks like straight up ass. If it looks cool, then it doesn't have what I need. And the Motorola RAZR is just waaaaaaaaaay too expensive to buy in Japan. I'm wondering if I could just get one in the US and get the service for it here. Theoretically, I don't see why it should be a problem, since it is a quad-band phone, but this is Japan, so they have to do something stupid to something that should make sense, right?

Oh well, I am going to keep looking, but if I find anything, I will post about it.

Vodafone.

Many of their 3G phones have Bluetooth and all are multiband.

Racing around to come up behind you again

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

That Motorola RAZR looks pretty sweet, but at first glace, doesn't seem to have a memory card expansion slot. This might not be a deal breaker for you, but it would be for me.

I'd immediately ignore any phones that have FM tuners or TV... you'll never use them since (from what I've seen) always suck anyway.

The 3G Vodafone 802sh (http://www.vodafone.jp/english/products/model_3G/v802sh/) has everything else (Global,IR, Bluetooth, etc..), and let's you listen to mp3s. Y3000 with new contract. It's really sweet. I've a 1gig SD card in mine and have a couple hundred songs and pretty-much unlimited pics/movie clips. The synchinging software it comes with isn't so bad either. Simple. I just plunk the phone right next to the laptop and update my stuff... no worries.

Honestly- it isn't as sexy as many phones out there, but almost all of the 3G phones look a little bricky.

In regards to memory cards, I don't know how much I care, just because I have an iPod for my music, and will be getting another one (iPod Photo) in the next month or so, so if I felt the need to look at pictures everywhere, I could.

I have been checking a bit into the Vodafones, and some of the new ones and I might get the 902SH:

It looks decent enough, and seems to have a slew of features, as well. And the quality of the screen looks pretty sweet.

And the RAZR has a USB pot, by the way, so that might be of some assistance.
