need a WMV to MPG converter for Macintosh.

Postby American Oyaji » Sat Apr 16, 2005 2:45 am

I'm running MacOS 9.2.2 and I want to be able to view WMV files hat are beyond WMP 7. I mean, I can download them and HEAR THEM, but I can't see them which is part of the humor.

Is there a a proggie out there that will either,
1. Allow me to view all versions of Windows Media in Mac OS 9.2.2
or
2. A program that will convert it to MPG so I can view it in Quicktime?

I've been searching and am coming up blanks.

(For those that would say upgrade to OSX, that's not really an option on a beige G3)

I would...
But school prices just went up. I was planning on getting one.

If I was in OSX, it wouldn't be an issue.

I've tried to post this but I'm having trouble with the New Post Bug.

1. You can install OS X on a beige G3 with the app XPostFacto.

http://www.opendarwin.org/projects/XPostFacto/

2. No WMV10 support on any Mac. It's a deliberate anticompetitive move by Microsoft. MS provides a WMP app for MacOS X, it sucks but runs WMV9 OK. VideoLanClient works OK too (OS X only).

3. Apple sells an MPG2 codec for QuickTime, it's $20, runs on OS 9 too.

I'll post this separately so I don't push my luck with the New Post Bug.

There's a new (as of today) gadget that will allow QT to work directly with WMV files on OS X (but no WMV10 support yet):

http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm

VideoLan is working on freeware WMV10 playback/transcoding but it's still in alpha test. No OS 9 support, sorry.

You poor OS 9 people really deserve an upgraded machine & OS.

AFAIK, it would still be an issue. for some reason one of the newer WMV have the same "can hear can't see" effect even with updated VLC on updated OSX... never been able to figure out why and the nothing could help me on the web.

somehow related, anyone knows a simple foolproof soft (or command line even) to grab streaming ASX and/or Real and transform it into MPG, AVI, MOV or whatever?

A. Oyaji,
I present to you the holy grail many of us Mac users have been waiting for... a tool that lets you use QuickTime to play Windows Media Video files.

The link is here.

There are two catches though:
first there is a small fee for the application.
second, it only works on OS X.

About switching from OS 9 to X. let me tell you I was a DIE HARD OS 9 person, and spat upon OS X for a long time. That was a mistake. it is literally the best system of any platform I've ever worked on and it REALLY does make your computing experience better. once you get used to it, you'll find that a lot of the simplicity of OS 9 that Mac fans love has remained. find a way to get your hands on OS X. it's worth it just for all the applications you can that don't work on OS 9. I still visit my OS 9 system from time to time, and it now seems like prehistoric computing. upgrade, you will be happy you did.

jim katta,
brotha, I KNOW.
You're preaching to the converted. I use OSX at school and it seems a lot simpler and not much different from OS9, but I'm sure that once I OWNED my own OSX system that I'd soon learn how much horsepower it had. (I push it when I can, got a 3dfx voodoo3 in this old thing)

Someone should come up with a magazine columb titled, This Old Mac....

nicknamed T.O.M.

I couldn't even handle the change to OS8! - for a long time I kept changing the icons of folders back to the flat manila rather than the "3D" look (maybe that could be done automatically with Resedit...)

Dude, I have my first mac here that I brough over from the US when I came to Japan, a G3/233 w/256ram which boots from OS9.2 and osX10.2.6. Yep, it works! it has a usb card in it for when I need it, but Don't boot much from OSX on it as it is only a scanning machine. -But it does work, it will work. However I wouldn't do any combo updates to OSX after 10.2.6, as I did once and the machine spasmed.

Also, not sure if this will help but I did find an app for changing winmedia called "EasyWMA", you might find over at VersionTracker.

Nope, it's as it has been.
I did replace the HD once, to a larger 13GB drive. You need at least 20-40 gb in todays world, as osx needs/writes to the first 8GB of disk space as I can remember. 512mb is usually recommended maybe, but I got it on the machine. It should be noted that I intend to soon replace it with a mini.

dude, a mac mini is definitely the move to make if you are on a tight budget. I've used one and it's worth it to get one if you're watching pennies.

Or if you're really on a tight budget, pick up an old (CRT) iMac. I picked up an iMac DV/SE back in October in Akiba for about $300. G3 400Mhz, 128MB, 13GB drive, presently running OSX 10.3.8 with nary a problem.

Granted, it's not my daily use machine, but it works great and a download slave, music player and SMB server for my Xbox. And since the Mini's come out, they go for about $150-200. If you want OSX on a budget and don't have a lot to spend, you may want to check how much CRT iMacs are going for where you live.

I cannot recall the forum, but one night I was searching google for ero-ref for an eromanga, and I came upon a J-ero-forum with all kinds of goodies. I ransacked the shit and lost the link. sorry.
