Woman 'deceived' into returning to Japan heads back to 'bosom' of North

BEIJING (AP) Pyongyang has announced that a Japanese woman who claimed she was tricked into being smuggled out of the North in 2003 after living there for four decades has returned to the reclusive state.
Choking back tears, Fudeko Hirashima, whose Korean name is Ahn Pil Hwa, appeared at a 10-minute news conference Monday at the North Korean Embassy in Beijing and said she was going back to the North after two years in Japan because she missed her two sons and grandchildren there.

"Long live the great general, (North Korean leader) Kim Jong Il!" Hirashima declared, her arms raised at the climax of a 10-minute news conference.

North Korea trotted out a Japanese woman on Monday who it said was kidnapped by Japan, in a bizarre twist to the usual tale of North Korean agents abducting Japanese nationals. Fudeko Hirashima, who moved to North Korea in 1959 after marrying a Korean man, told a rare news conference in the North Korean embassy in Beijing she was approached in late 2002 by a man offering to take her to Japan to see her younger sister. Hirashima said the man carried her on his back across the Tumen River into China, where a Japanese reporter and two others helped arrange for her to go to Japan. But she said she later began to miss her family in North Korea and the "benevolent policies" of Kim Jong-il, the secretive ruler of the Stalinist country. "I realised that a person's happiness did not depend on whether they were well-off, ate well or were well-dressed," Hirashima told reporters as she read from a statement at the embassy. "At last I made the decision to return to the bosom of the Great General and republic," she said, before standing, raising her arms and proclaiming, "Long live the General Kim Jong-il!"
