Another reason for the endless cooking-eating programs and quiz shows on Japanese TV is that is that goverment requires broadcasters to have 15% "educational" content.

Japanese are funny, but not on TV
Michael Naishtut
.....So why, then, does the quality of Japanese TV seem so, well, poor or boring or stupid? Several reasons, but I don't have all day, so I'll just focus on comedy.
Comedy is hugely popular in Japan. Japanese people, especially Osakans, love to laugh. Kyogen, the 600-year-old Japanese version of "Gilligan's Island," in which a mischievous servant screws things up and gets yelled at or chased by his master, is still performed regularly. Then of course there's rakugo, sit-down (kneel-down?) comedy where the storyteller spins whimsical yarns of udon-slurping, stealing birds, and wild rickshaw drivers, while playing all the different characters himself....more....

I take what Michael says seriously. For those that don't know, his main TV gig is being the star of the "Eigolian" (or maybe "Eigorian") English educational show for kids on NHK-kyoiku. It is possibly the funniest thing I have seen on TV in Japan, and I actually think it might be mostly intentional.

Michael Naishtut wrote:This is also one of the reasons why no real quality sitcom exists in Japan. It simply takes too much effort and expense and talent to make it successful, and since it would really only appeal to the Japanese market, the budget is nil. It's much easier for a Japanese TV producer to have a show with several famous comedians doing something silly for 30 minutes. Let's have races to see whose rice cooker cord rolls up the fastest, or let's take turns sprinkling "shichimi" pepper on ramen until the loser has to eat it!

On all my trips back to the U.S. recently, I've been holed up in hotel rooms and the TV ends up on more often than it should be. You know what? Rice cooker cords and shichimi are FUNNIER than the high-budget sitcoms in the U.S. nowadays. Expense and talent by themselves sure don't seem to be doing the trick.

Is he the guy with the pink hair? Different TV show I think. What's this about host-shagging, though?

spot on Omae! yeh, it was a different show, one of the nhk engrish shows, he was on with a rather young co-host, I used to watch it to scan for any useful japanese vocab actually, and it was obvious that in the first few episodes that he shagged her, they broke up [he did the breaking] then either they patched things up somehow, or nhk probably threatened to sack her/both of them so things got back to [almost] normal.

regarding Dave, hey I respect all the opinions voiced here, but as one wise dude once said on the silver screen "You can't polish a turd!" :D

Monty di Pietro: The money in Japanese TV
"Congratulations!" came the call from my agent two days later, "the director thought you were the most menacing person at the audition, and you got the job!" The JTV [Japanese Television] commercial I got was my first after 10 auditions. This time, I had gone in with a full Stanislavski emotional preparation on "menace." If I was going to fail again, I reasoned, at least I would have some fun. All those Sandy Weiss Method Acting classes are paying off, I smiled as I thanked my agent and hung up the phone - Hello, JTV megabucks!...more...

Embarassing

Postby canman » Wed Jul 20, 2005 7:24 pm

I was watching tv a few nights ago and there was Bobby, and Nakai from SMAP and a few others, and it was really terrible. They were talking about nostrils and how big they could make them when they flared their nostrils. Of course Bobby had the biggest and then they start to ask him to put his fingers in his nostrils, which of course he did, like a good trained animal. Then he had to put his thumbs up his nose, which he could also do. But I'm sitting there watching this thinking, what do Japanese people think when they see this guy. I don't care how much money he is making or how nice he is, it is just wrong to treat him like that, but also for Bobby to let others treat him like that. Just my two cents.

Mainichi: TV talent Dave Spector unharmed after car catches fire
TV producer Dave Spector escaped without injury on Sunday when his car burst into flames, police said. On Sunday afternoon, Spector, 52, started his car, which was parked in an apartment parking lot in Tokyo's Chiyoda-ku, for the first time in two months. The car's engine then caught fire. Firefighters rushed to the scene and successfully subdued the fire. Local police are investigating the cause of the fire.

Is he a producer or a talent?
He's probably just another FG trying to make a buck, but he always strikes me as coming across too smarmy.

He is both. His company is Spector Communications in Tokyo and Hollywood, primarily run by his wife. I called him this morning when I saw it in the paper (He's a Chicago homeboy). He had a vintage corvette (read had) and it was in cherry condition. I went to the opening of his remodeled office about two years ago and we went to the basement and he fired it up. Apparently, that was the last time he started it until yesterday when he really fired it up! He said he hadn't looked at it for a while and as a result thought he should start it up. It was idling and just exploded into flames, he didn't know why. Being a Vette by the time the FD showed, it was just an engine block with a lot of silly putty and hub caps laying around.

He wasn't hurt, but said it scared him shitless and of course none of the J-insurance will cover it. I would have cried, he just said shoganai, he didn't use it, so wouldn't miss it.

Guess he must be quite different in "real life" to how he is on the boob-tube.

Whenever I see him he comes across as a used car salesman who's had too much plastic surgery.
