His work on other diseases, especially yellow fever, took him as far afield as Ecuador and West Africa, and it was in tropical Africa, doing field research, that he contracted the disease that killed him in his early fifties.

Yomiuri: Noguchi Award amount to match Nobel
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said Saturday that the Hideyo Noguchi Award, a medical science prize he announced the establishment of last month, would carry a reward of between 100 million yen and 200 million yen to match the Nobel Prizes...The award will be given to people who have contributed to medical studies and services in African countries.
