Pantagraph: New mayor's trip to Japan will make good impression
Bloomington Mayor-elect Steve Stockton's planned trip to Japan will send a strong signal to Japan that the community's newly elected leader values continuing ties with that country, particularly the Sister City of Asahikawa. Ironically, Judy Markowitz, who Stockton will succeed as mayor, was Bloomington-Normal's first "emissary of goodwill" to Asahikawa when the Sister City relationship was established in 1962. She was teaching in Japan at the time. Stockton will be traveling to the event at his own expense. He also has offered to visit with Mitsubishi Motors Cos. officials at their Tokyo headquarters. Even if he doesn't meet with them, making the offer and visiting Japan should make a good impression on Mitsubishi officials. That could be valuable as the company ponders the future of the Twin City auto assembly plant.
