Ahhhh. Now that's a Good Question to pose the our FG native-speaker informants in the upside-down part of the world:
1. How much does the technical terminology of Beavis, Butthead, H. Simpson, et al figure into daily discourse in the Antipodes?
2. What is the dreamworld petroglyph for "assmonkey"?

American propaganda, I mean culture

Postby cliffy » Tue Dec 03, 2002 7:38 am

Beavis and Butthead, not much, we generaly get the references but the humour is almost non existant. ( I asked a lot of diferent age groups, same answer, not good)

SIMPSONS, a hell of a lot, less now than a few years ago but a lot of Homer and Bart isims are both used and understood but more for the teens and above

This is just the result of asking a few rellies and their kids and a few friends and so but I found no surprises, their answers were pretty much what i thought they would be exept for a little 8yo discussing B+B in the negative "They are stupid, yuck", this kid has a future 8)

Beavis and Butthead had their 15 minutes of fame here in Japan---basically they were a just a T-Shirt of the Minute. Inane doesn't translate well, even though it's the primary art form on TV here Japan.

The Simpsons on the other hand are so big that their do TV commericials for CC Lemon drink and CC Grape (the grape soda from Suntory) primarily uses Bartman (with his purple costume that matches the color of that soft drink) as their mascot.

Beavis and Butthead, "For Better Or Verse"
-- Mr Van Driessen's Haiku Lesson

Mr Van Driessen: "Today we're going to explore the world of haiku."

Beavis: "We're going to explore the world of getting high? Cool!"

Mr Van Driessen: "No, beavis, not *high* *cool*, haiku--the haunting japanese form of 3 line poetry."

"That was cool huh huh
When we killed that frog huh huh
It won't croak again"
--Butthead's Haiku for class

"Huh huh, huh huh huh huh huh mmm, uh huh huh huh huh huh, huh huh huh.
--Beavis' Haiku for class

Mr Van Driessen: "Very good! You both get A's for the day."

"For Better Or Verse" format: RealMedia, file size: 7.5mb
