Postby Taro Toporific » Thu Dec 05, 2002 9:42 pm

Since there's not much to celebrate this year in depressed Japan...
Japan brewer hopes drivers get into "Party Mood"
TOKYO, Dec 5 (Reuters) - With Japan's end-of-year party season about to get under way, one sake brewer is hoping its latest product will help people get home safely after enjoying the festivities. Enkai Kibun or "Party Mood", due to go on sale on December 12, is the first ever sake to be virtually free of alcohol...

Well, today's Japan Times gives the following reasoning...
Given the low alcohol content, the drink is not classified as sake under the Liquor Tax Law and is therefore exempt from tax. According to the maker, it will be sold as a soft drink that has refined flavors typical of sake but with only one-third of the calorie content of regular sake.

Fukumitsuya said it took three years to develop the drink, which was primarily intended for sake lovers who are no longer allowed to drink for health reasons.

Home Brew

Postby GomiGirl » Fri Dec 06, 2002 3:05 pm

I make my own ume-shu every June. The first batch is just about ready to open - just in time for Christmas parties. I have 6 litres in my genakn where it is dark, quiet and cool - just right for the minumum 6 months it needs to "sleep" before it is ready. It starts as white liquor which looks and smells like paint thinner but after sitting in plums and rock sugar it turns a yummy golden colour and becomes sticky...

I have no trouble with the taxes - despite the high alcohol content. Plus it is yummier than the bought stuff...

The plums are great to eat with ice cream but they are wicked!! (@_@)

Yum. I make mine from the plums of my own trees and "white brandy" rather than the rotgut "white liquor". Try that +alpha, bulk brandy next year that is sold just for ume-shu. It's only 300yen more per 2 liter box than white liquor and it's 300 times better tasting! Rrrrrrrrrrrralph! I'm drinking some vintage 2000 right now that is warmed on my mametan-kotatsu .
