Deep fried everything isn't all that healthy. ;)

Not sure what kind of oil they use for the frying either but I would guess that quite a few places use animal fat-based oils.

lol. He may not like the advice, but for the most part it has been spot on. Eating out as a strict vegitarian (or worse, a vegan) in Japan is not easy. He won't understand until he tries to do it.

Being Vegetarian in Japan

A brief guide for vegetarians coming to live in or visit Japan

A 2 second google search revealed this..... Honestly, I get steamed trying to help people who are too whiney and useless to help themselves.

I cannot refuse a request from a lady(Like that guy who drove Princess Di home after a few pints, that night in Paris), so
http://s4.invisionfree.com/The_Board_of_Biffo/index.php

Thread is called Japlan, just watch as he refuses to believe anything that people try and tell him

Its so strange, i have tried to help sooo many people who want to visit/live in Japan, but as soon as they get any advice that doesnt fit in with their pre-determined idea's about the place, they start crying and throwing insults around.

When i have time, i will tell you some very tedious tales about people who have thrown my help back in my face when i told them thing's like "talking about Hentai will NOT pick you up many women"

Well maybe i won't

That page has a decent set of links. I think he is spot on when he talks about the difficulty of finding something in convenience stores. The options narrow down quite sharply there. Even the dashimaki tamago will have some bonito kicking around.

I believe tempura is fine- they are kind of obsessive about using high quality vegetable oils at the right temperature.

No guarantees about the dipping sauce, though, so maybe dip it in soy sauce or eat it plain.

Easy now, the only thing I was moaning about was stuff like Asskissinger's rather unfriendly and disconcerting replies.

My problem has been that I have very little preconceptions about Japan as most of my previous misconceptions were roundly disposed of by the Japanese people I've known here in London, so was unsure as to what to expect, and the vegetarianism issues I only recently realised the seriousness of recently and panicked a bit.

I do apologise for not being more forthcoming about thanking those who have offered constructive help - I do appreciate it very much and thank you all for the links and advice.

I'm sorry if I appear to have thrown back anyone's advice back at them, but the only instance I recall that happening in the BoB thread was due to the confusion caused by the contradicting information the forumites there were giving me about mobile phone usage in Japan and what my network O2 were giving me - turns out the guys on the forum were correct.

So sorry again if I have rubbed anyone the wrong way. I have been getting a lot of contradicting info, plenty from those who haven't been to Japan and have the misconceptions many here talk about so it can be hard to distingish between the two sometimes. Thanks again for those who have offered help - it has been greatly helping me in putting together a plan for a damn good holiday and I really appreciate it.

Papa - who are you on the BoB by the way?

Orange in UK also give the same incorrect information about mobile usage in Japan as BT. I knew mine wouldn't work but the Orange employees weren't having any of it.

Enjoy your trip. Tell us how it goes.

Hey cuntface, come by my place and I'll cook up some nice delicious burgers. Don't worry, for vegetarians we can substitute dirt for ground beef. PS Have a nice trip. Sorry you're too much of a pansy to eat the local grub.

I went to this place (Lohas) today for lunch:

http://www.e-life.ne.jp/lohas/top.htm

It's vegan. Located in Nishi-Shinjuku. Pasta, curry, bentos.

I'm not an earth muffin or anything but I thought it was really good. A tad expensive in that the average dish ran around 900 yen. Open seating, no smoking. I'll be going back.

On my 1st ever stay in Japan i lost 20 pounds in the 1st 2 months, and that was eating Ramen (with lovely lard) for breakfast, Donburi for lunch, Sushi for dinner and a Yoshinoya at about 9 ish. I also drank Sapporo every single day and drank about 2 litres of that veggie juice every day too
I did no exercise whatsoever and had a 32 inch waist to start with. I looked like a homosexual after a while.

Just eating Japanese food was better than any diet i have ever tried.

So there

I would have gained 20 pounds on that diet. What did you eat before you went to Japan?
