Anything good to say about Japan?

I'll readily admit that I'm a bit clueless about most things and the name of this forum is Fucked Gaijin indicating that it's for Expats in Japan
who need to vent their frustrations at being strangers in a strange land, but it seems that the impression I get from a lot of posts is that there's nothing good about Japan or it's people.

I mean, between all the threads about goverment corruption,racist politicians, women getting gang raped, gaijin getting fucked over,etc, it's almost enough to make people think everyone in Japan is morally bankrupt.

So, is there anything good you folks can say about Japan and it's people?

Remember that things are reported only when they are 'news'. Crime in general in rare, and is the cause of many a bad habit, like carrying $1000 in your wallet, leaving doors and bicycles unlocked. It is rare to see people fighting anywhere. The last time I saw a fight was about 6 months ago - between foreigners.

The vast majority of people I have meet are both friendly and curious towards strangers. Rude behavior is rare - a refreshing change from Honk Kong or China.

I think that the politician here ARE morally bankrupt, but the average Joe is not a politician.

People sucking is universal; Japan doesn't have the monopoly on that.. But it's what we know because of where we live..

We're all at different stages of the 'gaijin in Japan' experience. For me, about every three months, I fucking hate this place.. For about a week. Then it's my home again. If I was completely happy with anywhere I lived, I'd probably be ignorant..

A lot of positive things are written on FG. Don't let the negativity shadow the silver lining.. I don't think we do.

Here's a short & sweet list of negative aspects of Japan. Trust me, for every negative thing listed, there are about 300 positives that I could list.

-Crowded trains (ONLY IN THE MORNING & LATE EVENING!)
-I saw a fight between a drunk Japanese guy Vs. an un-drunk white boy and the J-Dude was killed after a stomp to the face (3rd day in Japan... wow... what a "Welcome To The Country" experience...)
-It's sooooooooooooooooooo borring!!!!!!!! ....... oh wait, that was Korea.

There is lots positive about life in Japan -- that's why most of us choose to live here.

The "biggies":

Japan is a land of financial opportunity for a lot of gaijin -- if you have the right skills, contacts, and are willing to work at it. I suppose this can be said of most countries though.

Japan is a relatively safe place to live when compared with other industrialized nations. Street crime is low and violent crime even lower. That's why it's such big news when there is a violent crime here -- it's quite uncommon.

Japan has quite a good public health care system. Not as good as Canada's, but light-years ahead of many countries. That said, if you have lots of $$$ or excellent insurance and are in need of cutting edge treatment, the US would be preferable.

Challenge. Living in Japan presents challenges and opportunities to learn every day. I enjoy going home to "visit" but I find I'm going stir-crazy after about 10 days...

People. As with any country Japan has it's share of idiots. But for the most part I have positive feelings about the Japanese. (No, I have not lead a sheltered life here, nor am I "just off the boat"!)


A few other good points that quickly come to mind:

Fantastic transportation infrastructure
Convenience -- if you live in a city
Electronics -- if you are in Osaka or Tokyo even obscure electronics can be easily found
Cars -- lots of stuff that can't be bought outside Japan, and even better is that used car prices are amazingly cheap
Service -- Shop service in Japan is generally very very good.

There are many other reasons to live here and everyone has there own list... And there are certainly a fair number of Japan-hating gaijin living here. WTF they don't leave I don't understand. Life is too short to stay somewhere that makes you intensely unhappy. (I'm not referring to anyone on the board in particular, just a general comment.)

Eh, my reasons.
1) I am stuck here for the time being
2) I really don't want to hate this country. I try so hard to enjoy it, 99% of the time, I give it the benefit of the doubt on most issues and fucked up things. But, I have yet to have an entire day that was actually good if it involved Japanese people. The people around here could do so much better in my mind if when I am having a good day, they would shut up. If I was ready to give up, I would have just stayed in Beijing this winter when I went back. I will never love this country, but at the very least, I would prefer not to hate it.

I agree with FGL. Japan has many good point and that is why many of us settle here.
And not all the threads are bad things about Japan....

Every country has shitty points, and I have to admit that I focused on Japan's too much during some periods of my time here. And sometimes life just plain sucks. Pencilslave, don't tell me you never compalin about things back home in Alabama, is it. I think its human nature to find fault with the things that surround you. I find as soon as I'm home for just a few days the fog lifts and I remember all the things about home that pissed me off. Fucked gaijin is just an outlet for all of us long time residents to air our feelings with others who probably feel the same.
That being said, I will say it again, Onsens Onsens Onsens!!! The greatest place to relax. Cheap internet service, I don't think anybody I know in Canada has a fibre optic line like I do here and pays less that $30 a month.
Bilingual Sumo broadcasts. The list goes on and on.

i agree with FGL's list. overall, i figure in japan you have to give a little and you get a lot in return. the only thing is that the "little" you need to give is not optional, but once you "adapt" (and i don't mean you need to try to become more japanese than a japanese or anything), life here acn be very comfortable on many levels, especially for gaijins.

complaining fuels the threads and usually end up in healthy conversation (with the exception of some trolls of course), but the shit here is definitely not prominent over the convenience, safety, etc.

having said that, i complain about everything all the time, but i also realised i complain less here than in any other country i have lived in, including home.

Japan has as many good points and bad points as everywhere else. It just depends on who you are....somepeople find heaps of good and other heaps of bad.
The reason there may be alot of sort of negative stuff on here is for many it is the only place they can discuss such issues. Most people dont take nicely to negative comments about their homeland, and most Japanese certainly do not like crticism of Japan.

Here is my list of things i love about Japan

1. The fact i can drop something, leave my bike unlocked, my bag open and it it is never stolen
2. The food - good lord the food. I just salivate thinking of many dishes
3.The welcome. Japan may be a hard society to fit into, but ive never felt more welcome in my life
4. The cheap electronics
5. Being able to walk home alone at night and generally feel very safe
