PS3 Announced!

Postby FG Lurker » Tue May 17, 2005 10:42 am

Sony has announced the specs and other details about the PS3.

See here for a general story and here for some pretty wild looking specs.

Impressive on paper... It'll be interesting to see how things play out!

Impressive specs.

Of course, they should be taken with a truckload of salt, given Sony's history of exaggerated claims. "Real-time Toy Story graphics on PS2!!!" Yeah, right.

Gaming in 1080p does sound kinda nice though... :)

Oh, and what's with using the same font for the console as they've used for the Spider-Man movie titles? Does the Sony art dept. only have the one? :D

The console looks nice on it's side but the controllers are butt ugly.

I have been on a project to set up the equipment that is making most of the important chips for PS3 for the last 1.5 years. Lots of investment in new fabe abd equipment. Sony is expecting big returns.

Some of the fabs are setup that it would be difficult to change over to other products if there is a slowdown (memory for example $$$$). Sony is confident this will sell...
Anyway, PS3 is about 50% responsible for keeping me here.
So everyone go out and buy a PS3 or two and keep me employed :D :D

Despite having 5 consoles and 3 portable systems, I don't play as much as I used to. I still buy games regularly, but it's rare that I devote a lot of time to them.

That said, I'm keen on seeing what the new machines are really capable of. I wonder about the DRM thing too. Xbox Media Center has me absolutely spoiled. Whichever of the new systems will allow me to browse a Samba share and play media over my network will be the first one to get my money.

Same here, not much gaming lately. The only game I even touch these days is Super Monkey Ball DX on my Xbox. Apart from that the only thing I use my Xbox for is watching my downloaded divx movies with Xbox Media Center. It does everything I need, so I think I will wait for all three of the nextgen systems to come out before I decide what to buy.

Anybody got a guess as to some of the ports? I know the ones on the left side are (top to bottom) - HDMI, HDMI, standard Sony console A/V port, optical audio. The right ones are USB, USB - and then what? I'd guess that two of them are ethernet and modem, but what about the third? A second network port?

It could easily be a 2nd network port and this would make sense... It would allow PS3s to be chained together with CAT5 cross cables.

You can stack 'em... They just want to make sure the PS3 is on top. :D

The specs page was saying one ethernet in and two ethernet ports out...I imagine some home network stuff

Blah. I'm waaaaay past hardware envy. It all comes down to software. Boy, did I screw up getting PS2 (with the 1.00 software disc... only one for watching Region 1 DVDs). Fact is that the games in Japan sucked large. Something strange happened with PS2. America passed Japan for both volume and variety of quality games. I can't think of a single Japanese game that was good which wasn't available in North America. What a difference from the old cartridge days.
Nope. Until we have a region free gaming systems (a la PC or mod chipped XBox) no more game systems will get my money. XBox360 is the most likely to break my word. I've rented the last XBox and a ton of games from Blockbuster and I gotta say PS2 doesn't even come close. Never though I'd say that.

And how. I'll probably end up buying all 3 systems again, since they all seem to have a lot of potential, but it'll ultimately come down to the games.

Watcher wrote:Nope. Until we have a region free gaming systems (a la PC or mod chipped XBox) no more game systems will get my money.

I do wonder if one of the three will be a region free console. (I'm actually suprised that Sony didn't lock the PSP.) There's no sensible reason for lockouts anymore. If they must be region-locked, let's hope for the nearly-nonexistent locking of the Gamecube.

This matters a lot more to me now that I'm living here instead of the US. I like that with the use of an Action Replay disc I can buy GC games locally and still get US releases shipped here if I want that version instead. (Resident Evil 4 being a great example of this. It was cheaper to get the English version from Lik-sang then to deal with the J-version.) But since it looks like all 3 systems in the new generation will be slot or tray loaders, I don't expect that to happen so easily.

My biggest gripe with the Xbox is that there's too much of the same-old, same-old. I don't play sports games, and it feels like everything else is just racers and FPS titles. Good RPGs are few and far between, as are worthwhile platformers and memorable, quirky games.

Here's to hoping for more variety on the 360! :)

Gametrailers.com has a batch of videos from the Sony press conference. (Of course, the question is - how much of this is real-time and how much is pre-rendered?)

Motor Storm looks like a lot of fun. :D

I read somewhere that itll cost less than Y50,000

so $500 in US

and €1500 in Europe (cause Europeans always get fucked costwise... and we'll get it sometime near the end of 2008)

Never been to a sex shop in Japan? Good vibrators start around 10,000yen! :D Not the cheapo made-in-China crap.

The worst? Small electrical explosion when it is "in use" I guess! 8O

A more likely scenario would be a very short lifespan of said product though.
