What market did Korea have when the Korean war started? Korea was too poor to afford anything from the US or any other country back then.

Let's assume that America leaders have put American troops on Korea's soil for their own reasons and really don't care about the Korean people. Okay, question, how would this make the American leaders any different from Korean leaders who also don't care about the Korean people.

Second, get logical. Even if the US doesn't have its soldiers in Korea for the sole reason to protect Koreans doesn't the presence of the US military nevertheless accomplish this result? Could Korea ever defend itself without outside help? If you guys could, believe me, we all would be happy to leave you behind.

Unfortunately, the answer is no. The Korean people are completely incabable of defending themselves, they need an export market to grow and have a national psyche that is absolutely bizarre.

As much as I disagree with him on most issues, he does have a point.

South Korea doesnt have the level of equipment or experience or manpower that the U.S. military has on hand at any one time.
I mean, when was the last time South Korea was in a major military conflict? And before that? The U.S. has been in a major conflict just about every decade of its existence. The U.S. KNOWS war. AND it has a huge arsenal. With China backing it, North Korea would run over South Korea with no problems at all. It's only a U.S. presence in the region that keeps it stable. Were the U.S. to pull out, the cease fire would end real fast. Keep in mind that a state of war still technically exists between North and South Korea.

We were discussing the SOFA between Korea and the United States. He thought that it would be better if Korea and the U.S. were on more equal footing, and I got the impression *that* is the main point of contention. I told him that I think the U.S. would probably pull out all its armed forces before it allowed it to happen (witness the State Department's push for SOFA agreements over the jurisdiction of the world criminal court). Probably the best thing that could happen is reunification of the two Koreas.

It was interesting to hear an educated opinion on the subject... after watching all of the raving loonies protesting on television, it was a great change of pace.
