I was asked that same question by a student once. And it is definitely true. Just ask her why Japanese don't use backpacks.

Why do ALL...?!

Postby Mike Oxlong » Wed May 18, 2005 12:50 am

Why do all J-birds have some sort of LV item?! Wallet, bag, towel...

I use a backpack because it's convenient. I use the same one for hiking, camping, work, shopping and travel.

I don't use a backpack, just a bag.

Actually, there is one backpack I would buy. A few years back, Yoji Yamamoto released a backpack that unfolded into a leather jacket. Even when worn as a jacket, it still had a pouch big enough to carry the stuff you put in the backpack. Now THAT I would use.

If Loui Vuitton made a backpack it would suddenly be all the rage with J-Chicks. It would also be an ugly brown color that doesn't match what they are wearing.

I didn't have a backpack.

I had a briefcase.

Then I had a shoulder satchel

Mine looks like this:
Image

It's awesome and made to perfectly house my 15" TiBook.

For Powerbook 12" 15" 17" + iBook 12" 14"

Designed for easy laptop mobility, the Incase Nylon Backpack is a clean, stylish bag that carries a lot more than you would expect. Its soft-padded interior delivers ample protection, while its cleverly designed compartments offer an easy method of organizing and managing your computer, accessories and documents. All the while balancing the weight across your back more evenly and thereby providing more comfort.

- Soft mesh interior with padding
- Exterior pockets for flat documents
- Comfortable ergonomic shoulder strap
- Soft lined pocket for AC adapter and cables
- Organizer pockets for cards, pens, and small items

I need a backpack because my back is pretty messed up (lumbar disk surgery a ways back) and I need to carry my laptop around with me quite a bit.

To carry an briefcase or "hipster" bike messenger bag is not comfortable for me at all.

I think Japanese carry briefcases instead...because everyone else does so!

I remember her! How is she doing these days? Anyway, to answer the question, just fuck her really hard in the mouth for a while and she'll stop asking stupid questions. At least, that's what worked for me when I was with her.

Photography equipment

It seems to me that there are lots of Japanese photogs that have backpacks also. I think its the easiest way to carry all your cameras, lenses, and other photography equipment.

No not the packpackers, just the mid to long term "gaijin" Japanese I deal with daily, some for many years now. I recognise some people just by the 'Day'packs alone! they take them everywhere

True, they LOOK cooler, but they are not as comfy as a backpack evenly distributing the weight.

Back Packers

Postby Mennon » Wed May 18, 2005 11:25 am

Ha! Great forum topic! My co-worker and I call them "BPs". What do they carry in those bloody things?
Also, why are these BPs always wearing sandals, and tucking their Tshirts into their denim jeans?

Yep, it is true.

There are a couple of reasons I can think of:

1. Most FGs in (urban) Japan do not drive, and many use bikes. If you are biking to the station a backpack is the easiest way to carry stuff.

2. Backpacks are also relatively cheap, tough, and water resistant. All things that appeal to a lot of FGs.

fatslug wrote:how bout all you FG out there ?!?!? are u using one ?

Yeah, when I am on my bike I use either a backpack or a bum bag (aka fanny pack -- I'm sure the Aussies will love that term). When I'm in the car or on the train I use a briefcase though.

You'll notice that a lot of Japanese who ride bikes without baskets use backpacks too, as do some motorcyclers.

I remember when I used that term in front of my English friend in Japan. He looked at me funny and asked, "Does fanny mean your arse in America?" It took me a couple of seconds to understand what he was getting at. Then it hit me and we had a good laugh. Then we started wondering how that one got mixed up. Maybe something to do with getting a piece of ass??

Hehe, I said something about a "fanny full of fender" (rather old Canadian(?) expression meaning to get hit by a car) to an Aussie friend once... That caused her eyes to get VERY big. 8O

Personally I don't spend my time worrying about things like that. If it hits I will deal with it then.
