Yep, "sin taxes". That's where I got the idea from. Booze is heavily taxed in Canada too.

Hey, what's with us agreeing with one another all of a sudden??

I think with anyone, there are things you agree on and things you don't. I don't mind agreeing with people who I think are right no matter who they are. Only problem is I disagree with what most people think hee hee. Still, I'd rather have conflict than just nodding the head at whatever anyone said.

Absolutely nothing wrong with standing up for your beliefs. I always prefer to know where I stand with someone and where they stand on the issues being discussed.

Here in Oz I think they are considering fining/charging parents for letting their kids become obese. It is a form of child abuse they say.

It is! Some of those little porkers couldn't run 100m if their lives depended on it.

The only problem with trying to put a sin tax on food is there would be so much controversy over what's healthy and what isn't. Junk food like chips (crisps for you fucking Limeys) and candy bars is easy, but what about other stuff? Is beef bad for you? What about white bread and white rice? Apple juice is high in sugar and has little nutritional value. Most processed "health" foods really aren't that great for you either. I know someone who lost 40 lbs in 6 months on the Atkins diet but if we taxed fatty foods we'd be making him pay more for all the meat and cheese he ate.

Facking 'ell! You should see all the fat gits in England. Especially the girls. Seeing thongs and hipster jeans with lard hanging over the top is not attractive. Put it away!

After being in Japan for so long, with a majority of the girls looking slim and cute, looking around my hometown kinda hurts my pupils 8O The first thing I thought when I got back, looking at the TV commercials and crap that is sold as food, was 'Oh my God, England has turned into America'.

The English generally are not an attractive race, I feel! :puke:

After Japan, going out for food here is a fricking nightmare .

Overpriced, overcooked, overloaded with shite. Its seems in general people don't eat veggies, just anything brown or yellow. And huge. I have lost 2 kilos since I got home......

Eeeh, the days of rice and fish and 7-Eleven burritos.....

No, Americans are still some of the fattest fuckers on the planet. But the Euros are become obese fat bastards also.

"Top Ate" Fattest Countries

A protein-style burger and a side of light fries at In-N-Out Burger may be a fast, easy way to get a tasty low-carbohydrate meal. Nevertheless, with a whopping 700 calories, this kind of meal is quickly becoming one of the deadliest forms of overindulgence. According to the federal Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention, in the year 2000, poor diets and physical inactivity were responsible for 400,000 deaths, second only to cigarette smoking.
The CDC lists obesity as a deadly chronic disease that needs to be dealt with as soon as possible. Finding a solution to America's problem with obesity is now the No. 1 priority in the government agency's agenda. Experts at the center are afraid the long-term effects of bad eating habits and physical inactivity will soon become the most common cause of preventable death in America.

Fat Americans sue

According to the U.S. Census Bureau's report "Census 2000," 64.5 percent of adults over 20 years old are overweight. While only 14 percent of adults ages 18 to 29 are actually obese, experts worry individuals in the college age group may become overweight adults.
"To be physically active on campus is not easy at all," professor of exercise and nutritional sciences Thomas McKenzie said. "There aren't many places to put bikes or places for people who don't have money to work out."
He believes sedentary living, the high accessibility of fattening, sugary foods and low availability of ways to stay active on a college campus are some of the main reasons people today are becoming increasingly overweight. He said he thinks the solution might be for people to rearrange their environmental conditions, eat better and move more.

"If there's nothing around except doughnuts, then people will eat doughnuts," he said.
McKenzie also pointed out the fact that people are not born with a tendency to eat foods such as protein-style burgers. He said they are conditioned to do so instead.
Is obesity only a problem in the United States? According to the International Obesity Task Force, America is the second fattest nation in the world next to Samoa.

Phillip Kanavan, a marketing junior from Australia, said he believes America's problem with food can also be attributed to larger portion sizes.

"The size of the meals (in America) are about twice the size (of Australian meals)," Kanavan said. While he believes portion size is a problem, he said obesity needs to be addressed, not only by the government, but by individuals as well.
Eating habits aside, physical inactivity on a college campus is facilitated by the fact that most college students don't have the time or money to stay in shape. Japanese senior Heather Vantress feels as though staying in shape is an expensive life choice most people cannot afford.
"I wish I could join a gym but I don't have $20 to give away every month," she said.
She said another concern of hers is that college students are susceptible to other temptations besides the availability of Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
"I also think living on a college campus, you're encouraged to drink a lot more," Vantress said

Percent of adults who are obese* Men Women
Samoa 56 74.3
United States 27.7 34
England 21 23.5
Australia 18.5 18.2
Germany 18 20
Chile 15.7 23
Mexico 14.9 25.1
Saudi Arabia 13 20
France 12 17
Canada 11.8 13.7
Russia 10 25
Tunisia 2 8
Japan 1.9 2.9
Thailand 1.7 5.6
China 1 1.7
*Body mass index of 30 or higher (at least 30 or 40 pounds overweight, depending on height).
Rates aren't necessarily comparable because countries were surveyed in different years for different age ranges.

America does have, by far, the highest obesity rate amongst OECD nations.

But American figures are probably the most accurate and other countries rates are probably underestimated, and other countries are catching up fast:

quote:

With the exception of a few small countries such as Samoa, the United States has the world's highest-reported adult-obesity rate. Among the democratic, free-market members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the United States is the fattest, by far, with a 31 percent obesity rate. But obesity rates have increased in all 30 OECD countries during the past 20 years.

In most countries, people typically underestimate their weight when surveyed by researchers. In U.S. surveys, by contrast, volunteers are weighed by health professionals. The U.S. method provides higher but more accurate rates. So countries that rely on self-reporting might have obesity rates closer to the United States than statistics indicate.
