24" WUXGA TFT for under 120,000yen!

Was looking through Dell Japan's web site today, specifically at their TFT selection. For those who don't know, quite a few of Dell's TFTs are made by Samsung. And Samsung makes some killer displays.

For the next 3 days Dell is offering this:

Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW HAS 24" Wide TFT Flat Panel Monitor
Lots of specs here: http://tinyurl.com/d8qwp

They say they have 200 for 138,600yen. Samsung is selling the same display for 298,000. Get moving if you want one!!!

 I'd be pretty pissed if I was an Apple 20" owner though...

It also would not surprise me to see that Apple uses that 24" Samsung panel in their 24" Cinema Display. That's a helluva lot of extra money to pay for a pretty plastic case... (I wonder what Apple's warranty is? Dell gives 3 years.)

Can't see the point of paying all that!

Color accuracy. Brightness. Size. These are important to me for photo image editing.

And hey, it looks mighty sexy! :D

The Dell will BLIND you, it is way too bright. If you're a Mac guy, there is some shareware out there that will take it down to an acceptable level.

However, I would probably shoot myself if I had to look at that damn DELL logo every time I booted up my tower.

What do you mean by way to bright? I thought all these LCDs have color settings, and temperatures. At least on my Mitsubishi Diamondcrytsa 18inch models, I can adjust the color in quite a few ways.

I would assume this Dell model is quite capable as well. And with 12ms-16ms response time, it's quite snappy. You could play games on this without fail.

The resolution is ample. You can put a lot of stuff on that desktop :D If I had the yen, it would be a no contest.. I'd get two. One for me and one for my wife.

Yeah, but what I wrote about above is a 24 inch TFT for 138500.

The 20" sucker is 74,500. 8O :D With the remaining 125,000 you could get a helluva powerful PC to use with it -- a Dell Precision 370 Workstation, for example.

I was very tempted by Apple last summer when I rebuilt my home workstation. In the end the prices killed the deal and I built myself another PC.

If the costs of the panels have dropped so much that Dell can offer these insane deals then Apple's prices should come down (at least a bit) too. That's good news for the Society of Apple Kool Aid Drinkers. ;)

Nope... Only their 19" rotates I think.

The Dell has brightness and contrast controls... I'm not sure why Apple has this fetish for not putting any controls on their hardware anymore -- it's not like it reduces the prices or anything! (Yes, it does look better to have no buttons, I agree.)

Put a piece of black electricians tape over the logo. It's small to begin with, you'll never know it's there. ;)

Can't beat that.. Hhhhmm.. A G5 tower and 20" Dell.. I wonder if they'd get along? ;)

I'm biased because Macs are what I started editing on.. I use Windows 9 hours a day at work. For relaxing times, I make it Apple times.. Both have their strengths, but Macs are easier for me to keep from being infected, troubleshoot, and setup.. I pay a little more for that because it saves me time.. And we all know 'time is money'. ;)

I don't think there is a problem with compatibility anymore. It looks like the Apple one has come down too -- it's 94,000 + tax now. 20,000 is 20,000 of course, but it isn't quite as huge a gap as I expected.

I also have quite a long history with Mac. After Apple II I moved to the Mac, but once I started working it was PC + Windows.

I don't have a problem with infections etc -- Linux firewall (requires very little maintenance), and I use Firefox + Thunderbird along with some Antivirus software. The last virus infection I personally had was about 13 years ago on an Atari ST (copied software...)

I like the Mac. I just can't justify the expense right now -- especially when I would need to keep a PC around too. :(

You can rotate the 20s (not sure about the FWs, but the FP's can), as I have two on my desk right here.

Kots: on the PC the rotation is handled by the video card driver. I can't say for all cards, but there's a noticable performance lag compared to running the card in non-portrait mode.

For programming, the rotated 20" makes a lot of sense (1600x1200 becomes 1208x1600), because I can see more lines of code at a time.

Okay, dingo's going to jump in with all four paws here, even though he vowed not to post until Taro got back. Anyway, so Mac TFT displays are - what? - $800 (US) for a 20-inch model. That seems pretty comparable to the similar-sized Dell monitor. The 23-inch Mac display is about $1400 US, a bit pricey, but still close to the Dell price. I like the Mac's industrial design significantly more than Dell's somewhat dasai design. So, the question is, if I bought an Apple 23-incher in the US this summer and brought it back to Japan, could I get a TV tuner here so that I could use it as a TV monitor as well as a computer monitor? Thanks for any input, fellas (and sheilas).

94 in Japan vs Dell's 74. It's not huge, but it gets bigger if you buy two... Especially considering they are the same LG panel.

Yep, but 178 in Japan vs 138... And the Dell is an inch larger.

dingosatemybaby wrote:I like the Mac's industrial design significantly more than Dell's somewhat dasai design.

Yes, the Apple design is very nice... Basic black is not terrible though. For me it's all a tool anyway -- I am much more interested in seeing what is on the display itself.

That depends if the Apple display has an analogue input like the Dell does. If so then (probably) no problem. If not then probably no-go, unless you can find a TV tuner with a DVI output.

Insane price!

Postby FG Lurker » Thu May 26, 2005 2:16 pm

This is starting to get nuts. I just got one of Dell's email sales fliers...

The 24" display I posted about is now on sale for 111905 + tax + delivery. Total overall is 119,075. 8O

The link to follow is: http://ad.jp.dell.com/ml/T0261/ (IE 4.01 or greater only, unfortunately)
