After years of searching, I finally saw "Zatoichi 26," the last film in the series. It was made in 1989, I think it was 15 years after the penultimate Zatoichi film.

A friend of mine sent me the new Ozu box set. I haven't gotten into it yet because there are no subtitles, so if i want to watch it, I have to sit there and watch it and do nothing else. There's something about Ozu that makes you sit there and stick to the screen, even if it had subtitles. I'll have to watch Tokyo Monogatari again, it's certainly on my all-time Top 5 Films list.

Agreed. Forgot about that one. It's awesome, actually. The kids in it are phenomenal. Kore-eda is about the best there is when it comes to the current crop of J-directors....actually directors period.

Iden & Tity was a nice love and rock story. I just got Blood and Bones which supposedly is one of the best j-movie released last year but haven't watch it yet.
I want to see Vital and Late bloomer but those are kind of hard to find with english subtitles, my japanese isn't good enough to watch movie without it yet.
Rinjin 13 was also on my list but i missed it, so i guess i'll have to wait until it comes out at tsutaya.

I've got nostalgic attachment to the "Starwars" movies because they came out when I was a kid. But Episodes 1 and 2 weren't that good. I haven't seen 3 so I'll have to reserve judgement.

But that's not my point. I'm not saying that "Starwars" movies are great mature cinema. I'm just saying that I find it ironic that you'd mention anime, and especially crap like "Cutey Honey" and "Devilman" as examples of great Japanese films after saying "Starwars" is for kids. I didn't see the latest "Appleseed" movie but I did see "Ghost in the Shell: Innocence." I liked it, but it's not as smart and sophisticated as you anime geeks like to think. It's really just a bunch of psuedo-intellectual psycho-babble.

I liked daremo shiranai too. I saw... What was it, Swing Girls (?) the other day and I liked it plenty. Funny, light, though the first act was much better than the second. A friend also recommended Waterboys, about a high school swim team, by the same guy. If you work in a high school both of these films will probably resonate with you.

I rented another one 2 weeks ago, what was it... Barber Yoshimoto, something like that. On prominent display in the video store. It was OK. No, no, it wasn't. It was probably a little worse than OK. But, you could watch it.

I'd love to hear more recommendations. Good string here.
A good favorite, the first Japanese movie I saw, was Tampopo. Classic film on food. Ah, you've all probably already seen it, but it's another good recommendation.
