Well everything's been said. I'm riding the train minding my own business and some gaijin will sit down next to me and start bitching about life in Japan. All Japanese know some English, plus Japanese are good about reading body language and interpreting sentence tone. So now I'm lumped in with the retard bitching. That's the real reason gaijins avoid other gaijin. America has an equal number of problems we just know how to handle them. P.S. I leave in the morning for another 3 month hitch in Aichi.

What I really REALLY hate is when I'm sitting somewhere in public eating a sushi bento or something really nice, and then some gaijin sits down near me with a big grease-stinking bag of McDonalds.

I can't stand McDonalds. I have only eaten there ONCE in the last 25 years, at the McD's in Shinjuku Touchou, just so I could see what it was like. It was the only place in Japan that ever gave me food poisoning. I was sick for days. I guess I found out what it was like.

I'm not a frequent eater of mcdonalds in America (maybe once a year), but I have to say that the mcdonalds in japan are better (IMO). so it's more tempting when I'm there. teriaki burger is my crack when in akihabara.

I agree with what a couple of other people said...I hate gaijin who bitch about things in japan that are inherently japanese, but they continue to live in japan like someone is forcing them to.

I also agree about the nigerian comment. as an american black guy, it really ticks me off that they have so many japanese people believing they are american, thus misrepresenting what black americans are really like.

to add some balance..one thing I love are gaijin who try their best to speak japanese to each other. I don't know, I just like that for some reason.

As for the McDonalds thing - I agree, but do so hypocritically...
For a student in Japan barely making it to class on time and having one situated in between the apt and uni - its just too cheap and convenient - it would take too long to eat anything at yoshinoya etc. and as most mornings id wake up with a mild hangover: Y100 for 5 nuggets of "chicken" aint that Bad (in the short-term )
...mind you - id only ever snack on that stuff...
For a proper meal id go to Mos burger!

Yeah, I went to McD's more in Japan that I ever did or do in the States for the same reason as you: It was convenient. It was right by my train station and the cheapest thing there (except for Ramputei gyudon which I ate a lot of too).

the only thing that really bothers me about other gaijins is when they make zero attempt to underdtand the culture or the language. It only takes a look at a cheap guide book to know you should take your shoes off before going into homes, or to learn the word sumimasen. I dont expect people to be fluent or know everything - i dont think anyone can do that. but learning common manners and culture faux pas takes a small amount of time, but goes a long long way.

I HATE MCds in NZ with a passion. But when in japan i was partial to the occasional burger. For me it was one of the first places i felt confident enought to order from.
But if i have to get fast food i will hunt out a Mos Burger

I lived in Japan in the late 60's - when WWII was *still* big on most people's minds.

Been in San Francisco since then, but I brought back a "part of Japan" with me, and every day has been ocha, tatami, kotatsu, gohan etc... (although apparently Japan has taken a different route - McDonalds, concrete, chapatsu, etc...)

I hate gaijin who come here and try to be good employees and shit. Eikaiwa teachers who won't fuck their students. Refuse to drink all night on weekdays and so on. Japan is supposed to be about whoopin' it up and gettin' lots of tail and generally having a fuckin' ball. I had a similar experience trying to explain "Kouden" (funeral money?) to someone recently.

They did the same thing and ignored my advice by saying it wasn't thier custom too.

Well, we all know that the Japanese certainly don't expect gaijin to know about these special japanese customs and don't expect them to follow them. after all, this is special shit for pure-bred japanese only and so unique that only the great and mighty japanese could have thought of it and practice it. there is no way a gaijin could be smart enough to figure that stuff out.

I know we are living in the "inaka", but honestly that is the going price these days. It hurts when you get invited to 3 or 4 weddings a year. I've already been to two. When I got married my wife and I decided to try and keep the price as low as possible. At first I said we would pay for it all, since it was going to be rather small. But everyone advised that if we said no money all the guests would give even more. Then we thought ok a nice small amount like 5000 yen. But again we were advised that people would think they had to pay more or the food would be no good etc. Finally we decided to charge 13000, which I still thought was a lot of money, but looking back now it was a steal.

I also dislike Gaijin who take advantage of Japanese people's generosity and hospitality. I'm not talking about going out for dinner with students or anything like that. I had another former co-worker who was milking her students for money. She would compalin that her salary was barely enough to cover her expenses, and she wasn't having an easy time of it. So being nice older ladies they started to give her 40 000 a month. When she left Japan, they gave her an envelope with 200 000 in it. The reason I know this, is that when I took over her class, the ladies asked me after class, how was I doing financially. I said I was doing ok, no problems. They said oh well the other teacher said she didn't make enough to live on, so we helped her out.
