Info request: FG needs help

Postby DJEB » Thu May 26, 2005 12:59 pm

I'm looking for the contact info of the free legal aid office for foreigners in Japan. About 10 years ago a friend of mine used them to deal with an illegal eviction. I've got another friend now who had a visa sponsored by a small record label in Japan. Under the contract made with the Government of Japan, the employer is to pay the minimum full-time salary. I know the employer didn't do this as my friend was never paid any salary.

Can anyone provide the name and/or contact info of the office I am looking for or provide any other information that might be useful in his case?

Thanks

Unpaid work

That sounds like a problem to take to the LSO (Labour Standards Office). Most cities have one, and big cities like Tokyo have a lot (for each ward?). Usually the LSO in a large city has a translator or English-speaking staff to assist those whose Japanese is not adequate.

If the company sponsors a lot of workers you might want to go and talk to immigration too.

Just telling them that you are going to go and talk to immigration might generate a big response. No employer who regularly sponsors foreign staff wants to be on the bad side of immigration.

Japan Legal Aid Association English Page

The local ward office sometimes sets up a day for free consultations with lawyers. Your friend could try asking for details of the next one.

OH I have used this service and it is dead easy. They even provide a free translator is the lawyer is not comfortable in English.

For me it worked out really well.

Good luck for your friend DJEB.

Thanks. I'll tell him as it's someone you've met.

I've been in pretty good shape - some ups and downs. I just joined a gym and think that regular exercise is what I need to tackle the problem. Otherwise, I've been busy doing permacultureor blogging. Every time I think of this site, I think of some very old threads I've been meaning to finish, and laziness takes hold.

adoria, thanks for the web site. I've sent the link off to my friend.
