Half Weddings

Postby Mike Oxlong » Thu May 26, 2005 9:41 am

I went to a wedding in Tokyo between a foreign man and Japanese woman a few years back. The couple asked foreign guests (based in Japan) to pay their own travel costs and lodging in lieu of cash gifts. Some of these guests, however, paid cash gifts anyway, embarrassing those who didn't.

That would be a tough situation, especially if some of the foreign guests know some of the Japanese guests. Business relationships would make that especially hard.

I think it should have been an "all or nothing" thing on the part of the bride and groom. Splitting foreign guests and Japanese guests that way was a bad call.

Yes, it's the proper thing to do. For my wedding we only asked them to pay for their flights, and we handled everything else.

I gave each of my foreign guests a pre-written envelope that they could hand in at the desk, but with no money actually inside.

I did not like certain Japanese-American's. They would get upset with the Japanese whenever they thought they were from Japan. Hell, get that bug out of your ass...you look Japanese, although you're American....what did you expect? No reason to be freakin rude.

I never liked the belligerent gaijins in the train stations...gives me the creeps...dont like them here either.

I did notice one odd thing all those years in Japan. There have been many times I would see other gaijin's on the train or bus...but we would never talk to each other..not even look at each other....In the US, if there are other Japanese around, they are easier to approach.

OH WAIT, maybe I had B.O.?????

I recently declined a Japanese wedding (from a work colleague who never talks to me, or is even a good friend) by saying that my cousin from back home is stopping over during the weekend.

I dunno. I don't really hate any gaijin here... but this place can make you really negative if you let it I guess. Generally I tend to avoid people who talk too negative about anything, gaijin or Japanese alike. I've seen some horror faces of gaijin who must have worked here for years around the place. To my mind, the Japanese don't really uplift me spiritually in any way - quite the opposite if you ride the JR trains for 1 hour to work everyday. I think a lot of gaijin get stuck in the trap thinking that they have to try to fit in here.... and while I agree with that to a point, I generally like to include "being happy" as part of the life plan, something which seems to allude a lot of the population here for some reason (or maybe they actually are happy and I'm misreading facial expressions).

I think the Japanese are nice and all, and my only irks are when they seem to get offended really easily over things that I would consider not important in the big scheme of things .... like how one minor misunderstanding, if left to fester, seems to make them think I'm out to get them or something. They seem to be uncomfortable all the time and if I let it, it makes me uncomfortable as well. Poor people.

I've only been here a little more than a month now - and the only western persons I've talked to so-far, are a german girl who lives in my dorm, and a helpfull american dude who helped me out at a store in Akihabara (tnx, if you're out there).

I don't realy care all that much...but are you guys trying to avoid each other? Every day I see FG's making an effort not to stand to close to each other in the train or faking a reason not to get in the same elevator.

I saw an FG at a resturant in Ikebukuro the other day - who patiently waited for a table to be cleared - even thou 2 tables next to mine were vacant. He politely waved off the waitress who tried to seat him next to me.

Another one, reading a newspaper, started to cram himself into a morning train, when he noticed me and another FG, he looked at us for a second and turn around looking for another door; sadly he wasn't fast enough and the train left without him.

And what's with the staring? I mean, come on...most of the FG's I've walked past give the term rubberneckin' a whole new meaning. Not even japanese children stare as much as you guys. :?

Life is way too short to really bother hating people. If you don't like people just ignore them. I've been ignoring JETs for years.

Sure, rubbernecking or outright disdain for other FGs is a bit too much. But personally I didn't like the other extreem either: some FGs seem to assume that since I was one too, that means we have something in common and should instantly be friends or something. I was no more likely to exchange small talk with another gaijin as with any other person I encountered in Japan.

The Captain and I were approached by a fairly insane Brit by Yayogi park a while back. He asked how to get to Harajuku, and perhaps he really wanted to know. But the conversation quickly devolved into him making weird film references and literature references and comments on brits and americans and his messed up employment situation and so on. Why did this nut have to approach us instead of some Japanese person? Just because we had white skin? yep. That's why we had to listen to this wacko... We should have tried that staring technique!

I couldn't agree more. I don't see any reason why any sort of special kindness or friendship should materialize based on the color of ones skin. Acctualy, I'd quite prefer it, if strangers left me alone on the train - unless they have realy big knockers.

But going from just minding your own buisness, to activly making an effort as to not coming in contact with other people of your race, kind of puzzles me.
Maybe it's that I've only been here such a short time, maybe I'll get tired of tourists asking me if I like sake, or where they'll be able to find a geisha. Maybe I'll figure out that it's quite a pain to meet people who see your white ass, as an easy form of social catharsis, and unload their frustrations upon you.

It's most likely not my place to point a finger at anyone here - but it seems to me that something as pointless as the argument in this thread, would give you a perfect reason to stay clear of any FG.

similar to other peoples answers, I always get a laugh from gaijin who deliberately avoid you. You can feel their eyes straining not to make eye contact. Seems some loosers come here and feel like rock stars because some people actually want to talk with them. Yet, they think theyre better than other gaijin. How sad

I dont go out of my way to say wassup to people, but will say something if the guy/girl seems to be friendly.

I like to hear other foreigners speaking Japanese too. I think its cool when gaijin put in the effort to learn Japanese 8)

Glad I wasn't the only FG that noticed some FG'ers avoiding eye contact with other FG'ers in public.

Just thought that was strange. I also agree, I get a bit freaked if they are TOO friendly. Feels like they are after something..not being authentic..

I had this happen to me earlier this month. I was speaking to another gaijin on the train in English. And when he leaves this American couple who was sitting across from me tells me that they are amazed that I speak English very well.

WTF! I know I'm half Japanese, but I don't think I look like any Nihonjin.

Worse of all, I just say thank you and smile.

Yuki on Kissui.net mentioned faceanalyzer.com.
On my first try, I uploaded a most recent picture of myself. Straight-on, expressionless, with glasses (picture above..). They told me I was 94% South East Asian and 6% Chinese. Gender: FEMALE, Very Intelligent, High Risk, High Ambition, Very Low Gay Factor, High Honor, High Politeness, Average Sociability, Low Promiscuity, YOUR ARCHETYPE: BETA BOSS.
On my second try, I uploaded the second most recent picture of a straight-on looking picture, but I'm smiling really wide. They told me 98% South East Asian and 2% Korean/Japanese. At least they got that Japanese part right. Personality profiles was a bit lower than the first one. YOUR ARCHETYPE: BETA ACADMIC.
On the third try, I uploaded a picture from about two years ago, from when I had nothing to do so I took lots of pictures of myself. They told me: 100% Chinese. YOUR ARCHETYPE: BLUE COLLAR.
I guess I look South East Asian. I don't know if it's quite all that accurate, but it was fun anyway.

Things I hate about gaijins......

Postby Speed » Mon May 30, 2005 1:32 am

Can't stand English speakers on the train who can't seem to have a conversation without screaming like retards!!

It's annoying enough when little uneducated Japanese 'yankis' do it, but it's a helluva a lot more annoying when supposedly 'college educated' dipshits from abroad do it.

It's embarrassing being anywhere near 'em.

Yes, I call that biligerent behavoir.....but then again, they are everywhere in the world.....I always seperated myself from them because of how the Japanese tend to clump all foreigners together sometimes.
