S. Korean, Japan Coast Guard Are Locked in Standoff Over Boat
Bloomberg.com, June 2, 2005
South Korea and Japan are scuffling over a South Korean fishing boat that may have crossed into Japanese territorial waters in a standoff that's lasted 33 hours, an official statement from Seoul said.

South Korean and Japanese patrol boats have moored themselves on either side of the fishing boat, now in international waters between the two countries. Each side wants the other to back off so they can tow the fishing boat back to their respective countries, the South Korean foreign ministry said.

[...]

The incident started on May 31 at around 11:30 p.m., when the Japanese coast guard says it found the South Korean fishing boat "Shingpoong" operating 3 kilometers within Japan's territorial waters on the sea that lies between the two countries, the ministry statement said. The patrol boat stopped and tried to board the fishing boat resulting in one of its servicemen falling overboard.

The fishing boat fled with two Japanese coast guard officials on board before they were returned, Japan's Kyodo News reported late yesterday.

The fishing boat evaded the Japanese coast guard and crossed into international territories after midnight. The crewmen of Shinpoong radioed for assistance from South Korean authorities, prompting a South Korean patrol boat to come to its aid. Other boats from both sides later joined in the standoff.

If its in International waters, Japan must back off. The South Korean patrol crews should just board the fishing ship, run up the South Korean flag, and navigate it back home. If the Japanese were to fire on that ship after that, that's an act of war. :!:

Japan should have fired on it when it was still in Japanese waters. Guess they didn't cause a couple of their guys were on board. Live and learn I guess -- don't board until the vessel is well secured.

Firing on a fishing vessel? Talk about one of your all-time backfires... I can just imagine South Korean submarines sinking Japanese whale harvesters...

If the boat was in Japanese waters and made a run for it then shooting at it is justifiable.

Fishing boats are often not fishing -- well not for fish anyway. ;) Have you already forgotten all the Russian "fishing" boats of yesteryear?

Neo's talking about the NK spy ship that was sunk two years ago. FGL is talking about Soviet spy ships, or if we really want to go back into history, check out the U.S.S. Pueblo that was captured by the North Koreans...

South Korea and Japan end high seas showdown

SEOUL/TOKYO (Reuters) - South Korea and Japan reached a deal on Thursday to end a two-day, high seas standoff where coast guard vessels from both countries had lashed themselves to a wayward South Korean trawler ...more

The Fishing boat gets to live in Korea but Japan gets custody on weekends and every second school holiday period.

Under the deal, the trawler's skipper will issue a statement saying his boat violated Japan's maritime economic exclusion zone, did not respond to questioning and fled the scene, a South Korean Foreign Ministry official said.

He's a very lucky guy...

The ship was in Japanese territory and the J-Maritime police were in the process of investigating / boarding. The ship should be returned to Japan. I think that this is another issue (East Sea, etc.) that will make the Koreans look petty on the world stage.

So the Korean government knows they were wrong but will still help in a law take legal action. :?:
It's no wonder that the Koreans are taken seriously...
I bet they wouldn't take this attitude if it was China.

I would still say the Japanese are more rightwing and imperial in their attitude, because the SKoreans have yet to attack anyone. The Japanese have physically attacked Thai fishing boats, attacked the South Koreans, the Jpn ships opened fire on Vietnamese, fired gas grenades at refugees/asylum seekers, attacked a NK ship, fired at Phillipinos and claim Chinese territory, want the Russian islands, and claim parts of disputed Korean territory which Ishihara says they should defend by attacking anyone who approaches...

The Reason Japanese don't try this bullshit with Russia is because the Ruskies would respond by making a new flaming crater in Japan

If Korean nationalism continues, they may respond the same

Image

In this incident however I suspect the South Koreans are at fault with their heads up their ass, but that doesn't excuse Japan's highly agressive nature...is it any wonder there is so much hate in Asia

Also, someone needs to give the Koreans a geography lesson... The Sea of Japan wouldn't exist if Japan disappeared...That's why it's called the Sea of Japan.

Korean nationalistic tendencies make the Japanese right-wingers look very mundane indeed.

The fishermen want to sue because the coast gards beat the shit out of them. But you prick think it's normal that authorities should beat people up.

Ah yes, a completely unbiased opinion from everyone's favorite poster from Seoul. What are you doing on a Japan-oriented forum anyway? And you accuse me of coming here to vent frustration?

1. Your buddies the fishermen intruded into Japanese waters.
2. They then proceeded to resist arrest.
3. Following this they fled Japanese waters essentially kidnapping two Japanese nationals. (Taking a page from the North maybe?)

I think they should be very thankful to still have their freedom (not to mention their boat). Hilarious that they (and you) think they should be entitled to suing over this.

Yes, I totally agree. The incredibly ironic thing is that it is very likely that the original populations of both countries came from Mongolia. Guess familiarity really does breed contempt. ;)
