NEW TOBACCO RULES: Cigarette machines may soon card kids
Asahi Shimbun, Japan - July 20
...government and tobacco industry officials ... plan to make it difficult for those under the age of 20 to purchase smokes.
The Finance Ministry recently revised its rules for approving applications by tobacco retailers wishing to install vending machines.
Cigarette dispensers slated for restaurants and hotels will now be required to be in plain view of employees....
For its part, the industry is experimenting with juvenile-proof cigarette dispensers. An IC (integrated circuit) card verifying that the purchaser is an adult would be required to buy from dispensers. ...

I know they have had time-limits on those things for about 8 years, so they go off at a certain time...usually 11 or 11:30pm, both cigs and alcohol.

How could they possibly make I.D. required? Half the people don't have I.D.

As the Naniwan Kid said about 8 years ago beer vending machines officially stop working late at night to 'protect minors'. Actually some still operate 24/7 if you try using them. In 2000 some beer machine started to have an ID card scanning device on it--the a gray box in the upper right of the machine (see pix below) but I doubt it actually does anything other than sensing the presence of anything card shaped.

Japan's Liquor Stores Voluntarily Remove Beer Vending Machines
jointogether.org 6/2/00
Concerned about underage drinking and rampant alcoholism, liquor stores in Japan adopted a voluntary ban on the use of beer vending machines, the Associated Press reported May 31.
The All Japan Liquor Merchants Association estimated that 70 percent of the nation's 170,000 alcohol vending machines were shut down by the ban. Those not taking part in the ban include stores that stay open late and depend heavily on vending machine revenues.....
The ban also addresses a growing concern about heavy alcohol consumption in Japan.

IDENTIFICATION, PLEASE
j-door.com / 2001
For years, Japan's sake, beer, and whiskey vending machines served all comers alike, with teens and other underagers expected to, umm, honor the rules. The government finally realized that maybe not all were, and since last year, machines have been required to verify ID prior to selling alcohol or tobacco. This model, from Fujitaka, locks up tight unless a driver's license (or other age-based ID -- like a video rental chain store card) is inserted. It's also equipped with a touch-screen panel and a CCD camera -- so the sales clerk inside the shop (many beer vending machines are located outside mom and pop liquor stores) can hit a button to unlock the machine if the purchaser looks legal. [[that is, they look like they have money]]

There's a beer machine a few blocks from Roppongi Hills that requires one to buy a card in the nearby liquor store before any purchases can take place. What this means is that the machine is useless when the store closes. Of course when the store is open you can just walk on inside for your beer. So why would anyone use the machine? GuyJean and I were puzzled by this just last Friday. It was soon after that we ran into Kamome and wound up pretty loaded in a regular bar.

I know that cellphones are starting to be sold with IC cards built in. You can already use it at places like am/pm and eventually you'll be able to use it in place of your suica card on JR etc... Since most of the manufacturers are signed on I guess it's only a matter of time before all the phones have this technology and vending machines have readers for them (its already a reality in hong kong). I guess at that point it would be really easy to check a kids age by just reading their cellphone.

OK. Let's shoot for next week. Which day is best?
GomiGirl wrote:But the R6?? Is that some stylin' by GuyJean? I haven't seen it before either.
Yeah, I picked that up when my company moved from Ark to Roppongi Hills. During the move, we referred to Roppongi Hills as R6 (R for Roppongi, 6 for 6-Chome).. I think on the Oedo line Roppongi is E23, BTW.

Sorry GG, I didn't realize I was inviting myself to your party. I remember Guyjean telling me about the all-you-can-eat Thai food in Roppongi that was supposed to be really good. If you don't mind me tagging along, it should make for a nice afternoon.

GJ, I'm sure I can get myself to Almond at either time. Can we make it for 1PM, though? I'll pass out from hunger and heat stroke if we wait until 2PM.
