Image Ishihara claims Korean colonization was their own choice
Mainichi Shimbun, Oct 29 / 12:30 JST
Shintaro Ishihara has made another controversial gaffe, saying Japan's colonization
of Korea in 1910 was the choice of Korean people, it has been learned. ...
"Korea was not invaded by force," Ishihara reportedly told the meeting. "It (colonization) was instigated at their own will because they wanted the help of modernized Japanese people, who are of the same color, at a time when the Korean Peninsula was in confusion and people there needed to choose between Russia, China and Japan (for help)."

Chosun's mainstream Korean viewpoint

Postby Taro Toporific » Thu Oct 30, 2003 11:23 am

Caustic Saint wrote:He's gonna get roasted for that one. I can't wait to see the Korean papers tomorrow.

I'm assuming Chosun is about as mainstreama Korean viewpoint that can be found in English or Korean, right?

Does He Speak for Japan?
Chosun.com /Oct. 29, 2003 20:54 KST
...It would be one thing if you could just write his comments off as those of a crazy #&^@ who has taken every opportunity to make statements glorifying Japan's imperialist past and insult Korea and Japan's other neighbors, a politician on the far-right who'll do anything to agitate the masses for his own popularity.

At this point, however, we need to look the Japanese people straight in the face and ask if Ishihara's thoughtless statements are to be taken as representative of their views. His popularity goes up with every little gaffe like this, and there's no way for the Korean people to understand why in the world that is. ...

IIRC, Chosun has the largest circulation of all teh Korean-language papers in Korea. Strangely, the two English-language dailies (The Korea Times & The Korea Herald) have nothing about Ishihara's comments in today's online editions. I'd expected them to jump all over this one. :?

No, he means real honest to goodness crows, as in the big black birds that get into everyone's garbage, wake everyone up at 5am by landing on the roof, dive-bombing little kids who walk near their nests, etc, etc.

He failed in that regard... the number of crows in Tokyo-to have increase since he took office IIRC.

Sounds like you have some good reading assignments for Kots to deliver.

Like most people with a vague interest in politics, Kots' students only hear sound bites of Ishihara; they don't follow up on the facts. Like I said in a different thread, I don't teach, but if I did I think I would keep politics and current events out of the classroom. It's too easy to get distracted.

Ishihara calls Chinese 'ignorant' over rocket launch
Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Nov. 2, 2003
KAGOSHIMA -- Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara said that Chinese people were happy to see the recent launch of their spaceship because they were "ignorant."....
"Japan has launched excellent rockets as symbols of high technology," he said in the middle of the speech in Ibusuki, Kagoshima Prefecture. "But in China, people there were surprised to see a manned rocket launched. They were pleased because they were ignorant."
Ishihara added that such rockets were "old-fashioned," and the Japanese could develop similar ones in just a year.

When the space shuttle was first launched in 1981, it was found that some of the re-entry heat insulating tiles had somehow come off. Some twit here said that "if the Japanese had built it, this never would have happened" In 2003, I am still waiting for the Japanese Space Agency to stop sending their astronauts to fly in America shuttles and start building their own. Should happen any day now guys, prepare to be impressed.

During the big earthquake in Los Angeles some spans of a freeway came crashing down. Another twit here said, "This would never happen if the Japanese had built it". I'm sure all the long term FG remember what happened in Kobe.

Regarding Ishihara vs. the crows, I think the main problem is that Ishihara is outmatched by a superior intelligence.

I have no doubt that Japan would be capable of sending it's own manned flights into space, probably with some assistance from America and/or Russia. Attempting to do it within a year would be foolish, if not impossible.

I think the part of Ultra's post "Cost stops Japan joining space-faring nations club" is the likely reason that this has not come about. It is probably not so much a matter of technological issues, putting peope in space is not profitable whereas putting satellites in space is.

Changing the subject, I think it odd that Govenor Ishihara talks about ignorance only a short time after reading his views on Korea's colonial period, 1910 - 1945. (Apologies for using this post)

Kanagawa Gov. calls foreigners 'sneaky thieves'
Mainichi Shimbun, Nov 3
...."Foreigners are a bunch of sneaky thieves. As Ishihara has cracked down on them, they've all flowed into Kanagawa," Matsuzawa said during a speech campaigning for the Nov. 9 House of Representatives election.

When reporters questioned the governor about his remarks, he claimed he was only referring to "some foreigners," but then added "those who get into the country on work or tourist visas," which equates to nearly two-thirds of the non-Japanese population and nearly all of the foreign nationals not born or bred in the country ... <blah, blah, blah>

Blackcat, most is a very big word, but I think that most () posters on this forum as well as myself would agree that there is considerable racism in Japan.

There are various historical reasons for this. There is also the fact that Japan has been behind many other countries in deterring racism as it should. Making racism illegal is the first step. Japan is doing this, however it will take some time before it really takes effect. News stories focusing on "rampant" foreign crime will do little to alleviate misunderstanding between local and foreign residents.

Gov Blinky Ishihara and "The Collapse of Fantasy"

Postby Taro Toporific » Tue Nov 04, 2003 11:29 am

The Ishikawa Statement and the 1930s:
Japan's National Psyche Adrift

Japan Focus by Yoshida Tsukasa, ZNet Japan / November 02, 2003

....Ishihara's recent remark ...[is] "perfectly understandable" especially dangerous because it catalyzes the latent "problem of the 1930s" hidden in the deep recesses of the postwar Japanese psyche.
At that time, when the ripples from the Great Depression reached as far as Japan, bringing about "the Showa Slump," political power was wielded by Hamaguchi Yuko, the "Lion Prime Minister," and the Communications Minister was Koizumi Matajiro (grandfather of Prime Minister Koizumi). Unemployment was rampant across the nation, and the Mitsui zaibatsu engaged in massive speculation by buying up dollars with yen—"traitorous acts"—which earned them huge profits and nationwide reproach. These events led to the February 26 Incident—the shooting of Prime Minister Hamaguchi and the assassination of Mitsui chief Dan Takuma—and to the establishment of 'Manchukuo.' The road to Asian aggression, soaked in Japanese blood, began when national outrage at the effects of deflation joined hands with right-wing terrorists exhorting, "Punish the traitors!" and "Divine punishment!"
To the extent that it threatens to revive the ghost of militarism from the dark history of the 1930s, Ishihara's recent pronouncement is incomparably more serious than were his rash of earlier statements....

He should be removed from office for saying what he says... regardless. By the way is there any way to sue them for slandering gaijin? Is there any legal merit behind it? I wouldn't mind having a few extra man to throw around because what he said has effected me deeply. I am moved to tears to think that a politician could say things like that about gaijin, about chinese and their rockets, and all the other things he has said..

I demand an apology!
