ChartAttack: Live 8 Concerts Announced For Japan, Africa And England
In his endless quest for world domination, Bob Geldof has unofficially revealed three new host venues for his Live 8 charity concerts. Performances in Johannesburg, Tokyo and the English county of Cornwall join London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Philadelphia and Toronto as cities hosting the July 2 benefit gigs.
The organizers of Live 8 London received 2,000,000 applications for 150,000 tickets. Some tickets found their way to ebay but, after initially resisiting pressure, ebay agreed to pull the auctions.

Yomiuri: Live 8 in Tokyo
Following last Friday's announcement by Bob Geldof that Tokyo would be one of three additional cities taking part in the Live 8 multiconcert event, music fans in Japan have been waiting for information to be released on an official site thought to be: www.live8.jp. The event aims to pressure G-8 leaders into taking action to reduce poverty in Africa. The G-8 leaders will be meeting in Scotland from July 6.
According to music industry magazine Billboard, the Japan event will take place at Makuhari Messe on July 2 and advertising agency Dentsu will be involved in "providing media coordination and production-support services" for the Tokyo concert. While an official at Makuhari Messe confirmed that the venue was provisionally reserved for July 2, he said he was unable to confirm what the event was or who the promoter was. The delay in releasing information suggests promoters of the Tokyo event have yet to confirm the day, venue or acts for the event.

Yomiuri: Who is going to Live 8 Japan?
Successful applicants for the 10,000 free tickets for Live 8 Japan will be notified by e-mail from 8 p.m. tonight according to the Live 8 Japan press office. The time is five hours later than previously announced and follows the extension of the application deadline yesterday from noon to midnight, a change that seems to suggest the number of applicants was not as large as had been anticipated...more...

Shortly after 2pm (1500 AEST), Japanese band Rize sounded the first notes in the extravaganza by some 1,000 artists performing at 10 gigs across the Group of Eight economically most powerful nations plus South Africa ... more

Think Japan has somewhat missed the point (and maybe the scale) of the Live 8 event. It's not getting any coverage on Japanese TV, whereas English language satellite channels are all over it. Not saying it'll change the world, but it would have a much better chance if anyone here knew that it was happening and why.

Despite global buzz, Live 8 kicks off with a whimper in Japan
MAKUHARI, Japan -- AP, Saturday, July 2, 2005 --- The worldwide Live 8 charity extravaganza got off to a bit of an anticlimactic start Saturday...Added on to the Live 8 list at the last minute, the concert in Japan drew only about 10,000 people, all of whom were selected in a lottery. The venue in this Tokyo suburb normally holds about 20,000.
"It's always better to have more people," said Jesse, the lead singer for Rize, a Japanese hard rock/rap band that had the honour of being the first act to play in the Live 8 event...Still, he said it's the thought that counts....more....

It's too bad the Japan concert didn't take off. It looked like Bjork played in Japan. I watched the Philly show on TV and it seemed like a great time and a good cause.

After the cold war ended Japan has been the largest aid donor in the world (currently the US) so it's too bad there is a disconnect between government policy and public interest in something like Live 8. I'll be interested to see if this changes any of the policies of the G8. Here's hoping it will.
