Japan Times: Chiba man couldn't settle for just piece of pi
Akira Haraguchi says he was never a genius in school. But at 59, the Chiba man recited pi -- the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter -- from memory to 83,431 decimal places...Haraguchi began to memorize pi by "translating" the figures into Japanese words in accordance with the figures' pronunciation in the language, he said. On a daily basis, Haraguchi memorized translated words. As the chain became longer, he tried to memorize them in the way that they form sentences. As the number of sentences became large, he tried to memorize them as if they form a story. "Don't try too hard. Enjoy it," Haraguchi said. "If you do it out of a sense of obligation, you will surely fail."

Mainichi: Japanese man recites 100,000 digits of mathematical constant to break world record
A Japanese man has broken his own world record for memorizing the mathematical constant pi, reeling off 100,000 digits from memory in an attempt lasting more than 16 hours. Akira Haraguchi reached the 100,000th digit in the predawn hours of Wednesday.

the infinite series of numbers, which computers have calculated to more than 1 trillion digits without detecting any repetition or pattern, provides him with the source of epic novels and poems -- and even the answers to his lifelong spiritual quest.



So how does he do it? He has come up with his own way of assigning kana characters to each number. The number 0, for example, can be read as o, ra, ri, ru, re, ro, wo, on or oh; 1 can be a, i, u, e, hi, bi, pi, an, ah, hy, hyan, bya, or byan. The list goes on up to 9.

Combining these characters, he has created a myriad of stories and poems, including a story about the legendary 12th-century hero Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his sidekick Benkei, who was a Buddhist monk. In his January 2006 book titled "Bucchigiri Sekai Kiroku Hojisha no Kiokujutu (The Memorization Skills of a Whopping World-record Holder)," he explains that the first 15 digits of pi, which are 3.14159265358979, can be memorized as "saishi ikokuni mukosan kowakunaku" -- which roughly translates as: "The wife and children have gone abroad; the husband is not scared."

That may be too true. First, living in Chiba and also living with a man that sits around all day contemplating his naval and Pi, might be a very good excuse for a wife to hit a concourse at Narita ....
