Rob Pongi Featured In This Month's Rolling Stone

Postby mr. sparkle » Mon Jul 04, 2005 6:43 pm

I kid you not.

I just got an email from Rob. The boy has finally hit the big time. There's a picture of Rob and some info about his NoKo video obsession featured in a sidebar of the current issue of Rolling Stone.

Rolling Stone Magazine wrote:Rolling Stone: Summer Double Issue, Issue #977/978 June 30th-July 14th 2005, Jessica Alba cover

The List- Our Current Obsessions

2-American Idiot(picture of Rob Pongi on inset):

'To get an idea of how we're viewed by the rest of the world, check out the bizarre propaganda videos at robpongi.com. Highlight: "Fuck USA!, " a surprisingly catchy anti-Bush punk-rock screed from North Korea.'

Congrats ol' boy. Pickin' up my copy tomorrow. :kanpai:

unfortunately, tom green is in fact not only canadian, but from my hometown (ottawa) and also from the same end of town. anyone here from ottawa can correct me but i think he lived in kanata.

his teenage pranks were televised regularly and included such things as painting his parents' garage plaid or literally bringing a camera crew right into their bedroom at 2 or 3 a.m. he'd often target unaware bystanders. i think he was into rap for awhile too.

guess you could always google for more if you're bored.

Court battle

Postby Greji » Wed Jul 06, 2005 9:39 am

Rob Pongi wrote:Legally, is being called an "idiot" a possible case of slander or character defamation?

Quite unfortunately, the elements of proof in litigation for slander or defamation, begin with proving the initial basis wrong, to wit: the complaint is not an idiot. This could take a bit of time and we wouldn't dare let anyone from Roppongi take the stand.

Since it looks like an extended court battle, I would recommend you forego this as a waste of time which could be better used by organizing debauchry and shooting more videos. Also, I have checked with inside sources, who tell me that if they lose, "Rolled While Stoned" plans to get even by paying you in Euros. :toothy:

Hey Rob,

My 22 year old son, who by the way was born in Walnut Creek, because I know you are the original "geek from Walnut Creek," just saw some of these posts and would like to know:

What you really do for a living in Tokyo?

I told him, just as you told Jen, that you are Rob Pongi and you are from Roppongi, but he still believes that any of the posters on this site are all geeks living in Japan with nothing better to do with their time.

After reprimanding him, I told him that I would put the question directly to the master since I am also a nerd/geek.

Seriously, what do you do to pay the rent?

SF'd Gaijin

interesting thought popped into my head - what is the difference between a geek and a nerd...

I always thought that geeks actually produced stuff for nerds to play with. eg gaming - the geeks make them, test them etc and the nerds spend their waking hours playing them.

thoughts...

p.s. I am a keitai goddess geek girl. I don't play games, I make them. 8)

I've always thought the terms were interchangeable. A geek is a nerd and vice-versa. Bill Gates makes games, etc., but most people would agree that he's a nerd.

Oi Lawyer boy - there is a HUGE difference between geeks and nerds. Did CSTaylor and I teach you nothing!!!

Now I know that CS has an addiction to rugby shirts but this is not an indication of any nerdiness. He is a very talented developer and thus is not a nerd. Playing games in his spare time perhaps indicates he is a part time nerd but he is primarily a geek and geeks are cool. They build things like software and mobile phones that make even lawyer types like yourself look cool.

*takes tongue out of cheek* You know I think you are cool matie.

Bill Gates - he is in a category all of his own.. meglomaniacal nerd.. he doesn't build anything these days.

geek used to be a four letter word. Now it is a six figure one.

Unfortunately most of those shirts have been worn to death. Today I am wearing my fading BeOS t-shirt that I got at the one (and IIRC only) developer's convention. Some Sony bigwig was there, because they were about to announce that they'd be shipping the OS in some media platform product. But anyway...

Why, thank you.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. I think the coolest laywer I ever saw was the one played by Bill Murray in "Wild Things".

Same birthday as mine by the way... so far that's the only thing I have in common with the man.

Well I am sitting next to a BeOS full box with all the attachments.

Does anybody use BeBox's anymore? I would like to get rid of it as it is taking up space that I need for my new staff that I have just hired.

Geek or not, you and CST are cool! I wasn't really talking about anyone in particular.

Anyway, I wouldn't be so quick to adopt the word "geek" as a self-descriptive term if I were you. Wikipedia does point out that there is a difference between "geek" and "nerd", but the difference isn't as great as you say (and therefore geek isn't much better).

Wikipedia on the dispute between Nerds and Geeks wrote:
Pundits and observers dispute the relationship of the terms nerd and geek to one another. Some view the geek as a less technically skilled nerd. Some factions maintain that "nerds" have both technical skills and social competence, whereas geeks display technical skills while socially incompetent][/b]rom the 1950s at a time when many school students did not see excelling at school as "cool". Therefore nerd originated as a derogatory word (although some people now consider it a compliment), while the term geek became widespread later (1980s) and has avoided many of the negative connotations. Geek as a milder version of nerd may also apply to socially insignificant people, while nerd refers more to socially inept people.

From that discussion, neither term sounds particularly flattering to me.
