The vending machine stocking natto is the first of its kind in Ibaraki Prefecture. Although natto is offered in vending machines in Yamanashi and Mie prefectures..."The natto industry faces tough times. But we want to attract consumers with new ideas," a Daruma Shokuhin official said.

Natto vending machines might scare off the tourists, hee, hee.

Oh.. Well, it's not like it's being sold under a brand name likely to mislead tourists, like "Chocolate Cake."

Anyway, I thought natto scared everyone. I remember when I lived in a geshuku (I was the only gaijin), they served those little plastic packs of natto with every meal, and nobody ever ate it. I asked why they served it if nobody eats it, and the answer, "somebody MIGHT eat it."
