Takeshita Dori - pedestrians only???

Postby GomiGirl » Mon Sep 29, 2003 7:01 pm

I have a little rant regarding an extremely ignorant FG I came into contact with yesterday.

I was on Takeshita Dori in Harajuku yesterday evening around 7pm hurrying to try to find a Sake-ya-san to purchase some beer on my way to a friend's house for dinner.

Now everybody knows that Takeshita Dori is one of the busiest pedestrian streets in Tokyo and the prime time is a Sunday.

However, as I was entering the street, a large black Mercedes-Benz was beeping its horn trying to enter the street from the JR Harajuku side. In true Tokyo style people were largely ignoring this vehicle.

I looked through the window to see that it was two FG guys in the front seat - the passenger had a video camera set up against the windshield filming the people as they were scattering out of the way of the car on the street.

I said quite politely to the guys that they can't drive down this street. The ignorant knob-head driving said something like, "where is the sign that says you can't drive down this street?"

I kept walking as I was not in the mood for educating arrogant tossers. They kept driving past me and I repeated that they shouldn't be driving down this street. Also that in 5 years I have never seen a car drive down this street.

He replied gruffly that - "Well I have been here for 14 years and I can drive down this street if I like!!"

IMNSHO - you sir, are a tosser!! If you have been here for 14 years then you should know better.

Well if the guys in the car read this forum I want to tell you that you are both wankers and need a good bitch-slapping. Just because you are FG it doesn't mean that you can disobey street signs to take a film where-ever you like. But more than that, the obvious arrogance you displayed was appalling. SHAME ON YOU.

If you wanted to film the street you should have been on-foot. Put the camera on your head for all I care.. but driving down that street on a busy Sunday afternoon is just stupidity.

Black? Nah, mine's red. Image (me at Zama golf course)

However, even the Priests at Togo Shrine, who OWN the right of way on the street, never drive on Takeshita Dori after 6:30am. Sheesh. In "theory", shop owners have access rights Takeshita Dori but they don't do fool things like driving through the Sunday crush.

Well actually I am of half-colonial antipodean and half-blue collar Devonshire stock. Dual citizen..

Well I don't think that wanton vandalism would have made my point very well and would have just brought myself down to this particular twat's level.. However if did cross my mind but my walking pace was faster than this fool could drive through the crowd.

Where the hell were the cops while these Benz bozos spent 30-40 minutes pushing through the crowd?

...that's what they used to call me when I lived in Japan.

"bentsu"

"huh?"

"bentsu" - "car name" "bentsu!"

I've got a brand new combine harvester and I'll give you the key, Come on now, let's get together and smash a Benz or three.

Sorry GG, just kidding. Must have been the mention of Devonshire stock. I think I love you.......

I have not seen such blatant stupidity on the part of FG in Tokyo but I have seen others such as drinking beer on trains and behaving as if they were the king in Roppongi. Foreigners, especially the European and American kinds, get away with almost murder in Japan and yet they have the balls to shout discrimination, god forbid, should anyone tell them they can't do this or do that in Japan.

Another good reason to always have sharpened metal jacks in your pocket. Um officer, how do I get my car out of the impound lot since it has four flat tires?

drinking beer on trains

I almost always knock one back on the way home from work. I see salary men do it sometimes so I figure it's cool. I don't act like a drunk nutter or anything. I figure it's no different than a cola since I'm over 20. I'm talking JR, not subway cause I'm a Inaka Gaijin. Heck, they sell beer on the shinkansen come to think of it and at the kiosks as well.. I don't think the JPN mind, really. Driving down a popular pedestrian walkway infringes on people but having a brewskie doesn't, unless I spill it on them, which I never have.

Shinkansen isn't a train, it's like a very low flying jet plane. ;)

Yep, GG, no need for that - but perhaps a milkshake or more greasy product over their windscreen would've got the message across. It sounds like you had time to order two, drink one and still share the other one with them before they got through the crowd.

There's also the Beverley Hills Cop banana (or potato, etc) in the exhaust pipe, especially good if they didn't see you - car splutters to a stop and keeps them amused for hours trying to work out what's wrong. Police eventually finish their seista, arrive and ask what they were doing there in the first place. Maybe in the meantime, a few young punks decide to take shortcuts across the bonnet/hood, etc.

Mind you, nothing worth putting yourself in danger for - especially if they were a couple of Charimsa Men
