
Japanese children have been exposed to so many artificial additives that they are suffering "taste numbness", despite the country being famed for its super-healthy diet of raw fish and vegetables...Tsukasa Abe, a former employee of a food additive trading company, writing in Sapio magazine, said that Japanese children now routinely douse the meals that their parents grew up on with ketchup, mayonnaise or soy sauce. Artificial colouring and flavourings are designed to "give new life to vegetables that are on the brink of being inedible", he said. He believes that "taste numbness" afflicts around 30 per cent of Japanese children. By Western standards, Japan is still a country in which the obese really stand out in society, with a mere 24 per cent of people aged over 16 considered to be overweight - in comparison with 65 per cent in the United States.
