Hell, I didn't even start teaching 'til after I was 30. It's a chilled out gig with lots of free time, I can dress however I like for work and get 7 weeks paid vacation a year.
What's not to like about teaching English?

Unless you have your own school of course, or have one of super-rare jobs that pays very well.

Most of my English Teacher mates use the free time to suppliment their income with free lance work in other fields, eg training, IT, design, whatever.
Keeps the brain working in something other than teaching and lets them have more disposable income to play more or travel more.
But then most of my friends are very dynamic and "get-up-and-go" types.

It really depends on how much they make in their freelance work... When I taught I did that too, but it still wasn't fantastic money overall.
GomiGirl wrote:It is also more to do with keeping the brain going. My friends who do this see teaching as a way of paying the bills while giving them the freedom to explore some less stable but more satisfying and creative pursuits - eg freelance design... Most of them move out of teaching after they have gained enough experience and clients to go out on their own. gomichild is a prime example of this. She is certainly not the sort to let barnacles grow under her feet..
But each to their own..
